  1. Right. No team in history has ever done that before. Didn’t Epstein’s Red Sox have similar frustrations back in the 2005 ALDS against the White Sox?
  2. He’s contractually forbidden from biking with Chris Sale…
  3. Best bets are arbitration eligible pitchers on low budget, non-competitive teams. That makes the most likely candidates to be Pedro Lopez and Jesus Luzardo, from what I can see…
  4. His 4.12 in 9 career starts does put him a lot closer to Mike Maddux than to Greg, but I’m not sure I’d call him “terrible.” If that’s terrible, then what adjective describes Gerrit Cole and his 4.60 ERA since the All Star break?
  5. Most ball players go where the money is. If the Sox meet his price, he’ll stay…
  6. Hugh did like Alcantara, which would be great. IMO right team, wrong pitcher. Alcantara is probably not available, since they just extended him to a VERY reasonable 5 yr $56mill extension. Pedro Lopez and Sixto Sanchez are probably more available…
  7. Did you pledge more?
  8. And extend Devers…
  9. I have my doubts “elite SP” is a realistic target. For one thing, I’m guessing it sounds like a rare commodity that’s difficult to acquire. For another, injuries or not, the Sox made some of those moves last off-season. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sox cobbled together a rotation from Sale, Paxton, Pivetta, Wacha (hopefully), Whitlock, Crawford, and Bello while still having Winckowski, Mata, Ward, and a few others ready in the minors for depth. Focus more on the bullpen, hopefully 3 new arms. Headlined by Michael Fulmer. Not sure why people think Story “can’t” return to SS. Whether or not he should is another matter, but is there some reason he just is physically unable to? As for the rest of the lineup - the need probably 2b, 2 OF and a DH. DH might wind up being Casas. And Enmanuel Valdez might even be in the mix for 2b. But with no close OFs, I hope the Sox focus on players with good OBP and defense…
  10. They also have Cincinnati. And they have 6 games against the Yankees, whom they have beaten 4 times in their last 5 games…
  11. That’s been one of my points in the 2023 thread
  12. That’s what I was thinking but it’s moot now…
  13. Only in September. They were a lot of fun for 5 months…
  14. I know he has a checkered past, but when McGuire comes up he’s been able to make good things happen…
  15. Bear in mind Dalbec is replacing an injured player there now…
  16. They shouldn’t sign Devers because Mookie got away. That’s actually why they extended Bogaerts (good) and Sale (awful). That’s not how a GM should build a team. They should extend Devers because he’s a young player capable of being a foundation you build a team around for the next several seasons…
  17. Are there better FA options to go large and long on? To me, Devers outranks the field…
  18. Out of curiousity, what was the consensus about Bloom after 2021?
  19. It was the best possible option. Unless you preferred Graterol…
  20. So? Bad grades on a trade equate to neither wins nor losses. Bottom line is the Sox had TWO options for Betts’ trades. Not three. Not 5. Not 29. Two. And neither option would have gotten a good grade. Keeping Betts actually would have been worse. The 2020 team would have still been without pitching. (Sale didn’t have TJ because Mookie got traded.) And maybe finished a tad higher, but not much. Then Betts walks for draft pick comp and Mayer doesn’t fall to Boston. And if Betts hits the open market, he can’t re-sign with Boston, because they would still be trying to reset. Plus they used his money on Bogaerts and Sale. Maybe he winds up in LA anyway. Or maybe, just maybe he does because the best offer puts him in pinstripes in the Bronx. But, hey, John Tomase didn’t like the trade. The “D” from San Diego would be better…
  21. Actually most trades like that yield far less long term. What did Baltimore get for Machado, for example? Verdugo alone made it a good trade for a short term superstar…
  22. I still liked Graterol better. Been saying that since December, 2020. But the Sox didn’t have as much leverage as you think. If the Dodgers balked, they could have just waited for 2020 to end and gotten Betts for the price of his extension and not given up anyone…
