I think they’ll spend on free agents. Hopefully they extend Devers and bring back Bogaerts, Wacha and Hernandez. (I’m doubtful on Bogaerts.) Beyond that, I like to see this team get back to using OBP. Nimmo (also unlikely) and Josh Bell make for good targets…

As much as I’d love Nimmo, the Mets maintain interest, can afford him, and will definitely be offering him a QO. I doubt the Sox get Nimmo. I like Fulmer a lot, too. But so will half the league. Of the three relievers I’ve highlighted (Fulmer, Rafael Montero , Blake Treinen), Fulmer is my favorite but possibly the most expensive/least likely. Kolten Wong (or Adam Frazier) would be nice. Good defensive skills and good (albeit not great OBP). Interestingly if Jon Berti is too old, he’s only 9 months older than Wong. (Of course Wong is far more accomplished and simply better). Screw Navraez. I’m ok with McGuire and Connor Wong. I do love the idea of bringing back Kike and, if they move either Casas or Hosmer, signing Josh Bell. Also, Devers over Swanson all day. (And why would the Sox want both Swanson and K Wong? Story being dealt?)

Of course if the Sox go crazy with infield spending, it would get a little unrealistic. Hopefully they extend Devers…

Berti isn’t a building block for the future, he’s just a useful player with a diverse skill set to serve as a throw-in to this deal because at some point, possibly this year, possibly next, his salary will be more than the Marlins care to pay him…

It’s a tough call, because I don’t know what they look for in a player. But with Yorke’s down season and Bleday already in some games, the safe answer is they probably stick with the cheap guy they have…

I do think an offer of Casas and Duran might get back Pablo Lopez and second year arb Jon Berti, who is absolutely a Bloom-type player and would give Cora a better alternative at 2b to compliment Arroyo than Enmanuel Valdez. In fact, deal almost makes sense for both teams…

If the Sox can’t sign Bogaerts, Story to SS and Arroyo/Valdez at 2b. If I’m signing an FA SS, Correa makes more sense than Swanson…

Casas and Duran for Pablo Lopez and CF JJ Bleday (excellent walk rate in MiLB) Then sign Josh Bell to DH/1b with Hosmer. At least we know with Bell, the QO will not be an issue…

Is Casas really filling a hole at 1b? The Sox can have a very mediocre (but reportedly lovable) Eric Hosmer play there for minimum wage for the next 3 seasons. By then, if Casas is still making minimum wage, he was the wrong horse to bet on…

Pedro was the reigning NL Cy Young winner coming off back-to-back All Star games. If someone had called him a future Hall of Famer then, at best you could call that judgment “premature”. The problem is only a few trade are MLB player for MLB player, at least when compared to MLB player for prospect trades. So in order to trade for MLB players, you really do need prospects. This is to go along with the ones you need to make minimum wage in MLB so you can afford and retain your stats. So if the Sox want to trade for MLB players, they really need to have some prospects (re: trade capital) first…

I agree and have been saying do for a while. Minimum wage and serviceable makes big contracts more affordable. But I greatly prefer Devers over Judge. Also I think the Sox need to pay close attention to San Diego and see how that whole mess plays out. I doubt the Sox trade Casas for a SP. More likely they look for Wacha 2.0…

f*** Judge. He turned down 7 years $210mill from the Yankees. That means he wants either more than 7 years or more than $210mill or, more likely, both. He’s also 30 years old and just topped the elusive 112 games mark for the third time in his career. He is EXACTLY the type of free agent the Sox need to avoid. A short term fix that requires a long term commitment stands a very good chance of being another problematic contract…

I’m normally hesitant, but Wacha might be a time to just sign away. He hasn’t missed much if any time prior in the seasons just to coming to Boston, and they seem to have found a pitcher they can help EXCEL. Obviously he could price himself out, but the Sox need to make this effort. Also, finding another Wacha would be pretty cool…

I doubt Judge even becomes an option. I would explore trading Casas for a SP because the Sox already have a minimum wage 1b in Hosmer. I do find it odd that a lot of people and even Soxprospects.com are putting Hosmer and his .742OPS over the last 3 years at DH.

Not counting minor league depth, how many SPs do you think the Sox are going to add next season? I’d be surprised if it was more than one, unless they give Eovaldi a QO, against my wishes. Despite their recent uselessness, the Sox do control Sale and Paxton for next season (they’re not walking away from Paxton). Pivetta will be back. And if Eovaldi chooses to return, he and (not a fan of this) Whitlock likely round out the rotation. Bello, Crawford, Winckowski in AAA for depth. I’d love to see them raid the Marlins for a SP, but I don’t see a match beyond maybe a Dalbec/Eleiser Hernandez swap. (Hernandez is a terrific talent, but hurt a lot.). Or maybe Duran for Sixto Sanchez, whose father better than Hernandez but hurt even more. Casas for Pablo Lopez? (It’s close on BTV.) If the Sox are going to spend this off-season, it needs to start internally. Extend Devers.

Mostly because it’s unrealistic. The Sox need to acquire Hall of Fame talent to make a deal in you eyes? Not to mention, the Sox traded away Manny more times than they traded for him…

The Sox were 92-70 last year. Does the axiom about being what your record says you only apply to bad teams?

Certainly that can be done with some internal options that are willing, like Devers and maybe Verdugo. But you can’t always count on others reaching free agency. And certainly anyone that does will have a QO, which becomes a factor at some point…
