I doubt they trade him anyway. The return on rental position players isn’t always that great and they might find the extra exclusive negotiating time and potential comp pick to be more valuable than any offers they get. Lou Merlonii does think they’ll work out a deal before he opts out FWIW…

And there are lots of fans out there who think left-handed pitchers have a natural biomechanical advantage because they throw across their bodies. I’m sure Whitlock would be a terrific closer. But this is probably true for nearly every starting pitcher in MLB. But to call him an average starter - as if that is somehow a detriment - after 7 career starts is extremely premature. Even if it ends up being true, it’s an uncertainty at this point…

Barring some unforeseen development, I doubt the Sox trade Xander. Teams are not likely to get a top tier prospect for 2 months of him and most teams in the hunt are set at shortstop. The Cardinals are the lone exception but certainly they won’t trade Herrera with Yadier months away from hanging up his spikes. The exclusive negotiating period and draft pick comp (if negotiations fail) are probably more valuable than anything they’ll get in a trade…

I disagree that Whitlock is an average starter. He’s been treated with kid gloves because of his injury history and career IP numbers, but his only bad start was against Seattle, where he gave up 5 of the 14 ER he’s allowed in that role. Houck on the other hand, is just being used in a way I will never understand. His role should be expanded into more games and higher leverage situations. If the Sale injury bumped Whitlock to the rotation, that’s fine. But the continuous use of Houck in this fashion while Diekman, Robles and Barnes flummox through high leverage situations seems inexcusable to me…

1. You’re double dipping. Several of those blown save games were started by Whitlock 2. Not all blown saves are losses. The Sox had a blown save in the Franchy Walk Off Grand Slam Game, for example. 3. Some blown saves come really early. Brasier has one in the fifth inning this year, which I didn’t think was possible. (Apparently it is but you have to be the second or later pitcher out of the bullpen.). If you’re advocating for a closer, you shouldn’t be putting too much stock in fifth inning leads being lost…

I would assume you mean Victor Robles, because that package gets you nowhere near Juan Soto. I’m always amazed by the mentality of some people “This player is horrible!! He sucks!! Most disappointing ever!! Let’s trade him for a superstar!!” I know, I know. This is just part of a package. Well, according to BTV, the rest of that package better be Whitlock and Mayer. And even then it might be light…

The Sox have shown a willingness to pay. They have had a top 5 payroll every year for a couple of decades now. The problem is they (or any team) just can’t pay everyone. And when you pay Player A, it can sometimes make it difficult to pay Player B. Other teams do this quite often as well. Didn’t you notice the roster juggling the Dodgers did to replace Kelsey Jansen with Craig Kimbrel?

I hope at least Devers. The signing of Story has taken away some of Bogaerts’ aforementioned leverage, and his demands probably exceed the Sox’ desired budget. But we have seen Whitlock extended. I imagine if they ever give Houck a role and he excels in it, he’s another candidate…

fWAR does depend on opportunities and playing time. Would he be used the same in Boston, where he might be the high leverage guy? Now I know his physical raised a bunch of red flags. Not sure if that could or should be argued with, even though all that came out publicly was he wouldn’t be a starting pitcher…

And I was ok with that. You need arms in the bullpen, too. But the Sox we’re dealing one year of Betts. They weren’t going to get Dustin May or Josiah Gray in that deal. Look what it took to pry Gray out of LA as it is..

True, unless you extend them before they can declare free agency. But even then, as long as free agency is still an option, the player and his agent have all the leverage …

I’ve been pretty vocal about my preference for Graterol over Downs and Wong. But then that Minnesota got involved just shows how hard it can be to pry pitching prospects from Andrew Friedman. As for Downs and Wong, it’s still too early to give up on them. Wong has a low ceiling, but Downs does not and his numbers/play took a huge hit with COVID and the Sox subsequent plan for him…
