  1. You can do that with any era. When you think of the ‘27 Yankees aka Murderer’s Row and the Hall of Famers, do you think of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri? Or do you think of Earle Combs and Herb Pennock?
  2. Of course at the time, Bloom and probably knew the Rays’ farm better than Boston’s..
  3. There’s a difference to me in a stupid move and a good move that didn’t pan out for whatever reason. For example, I had no issues with extending Barnes, who was a stud at the time and many on here thought would command a contract similar to the 3 year $54mill deal that Liam Hendricks got. I can’t consider that low risk extension as bad as, say, not protecting Ward….
  4. Chafin is the preferable option. I can’t believe he hasn’t signed anywhere yet. His demands must be ridiculous. Sheffield is a question mark, but also (I believe) has an option left…
  5. I will admit I thought the Sox made a good trade there…
  6. What if they’re sending back Nate Eovaldi?
  7. The Mariners DFAd former top prospect LHP Justus Sheffield. Sheffield has struggled but mostly been used as a starter. Wondering if the Sox might have interest in him as a replacement for departed LHRPs Taylor, Hernandez and Strahm…
  8. If everyone made a list of their 10 worst Bloom moves, the lists would be all over the place, and any ensuing debate might ignore the obvious - which is that there are a lot of candidates. Conversely if we named the 10 best, I would expect much similar lists, although some differences due to how they get weighed by individuals and some wouldn’t credit him for moves they felt were obvious. I think his direction is what this team needs. His steps to get there are largely debatable…
  9. Last year it was 158 IP…
  10. What will really make or beak this season for the Sox are starters 6-10. If Bello is one, that’s good. Crawford looked acceptable for stretches last year. Winckowski appears to be a RP to me, but will need to improve on his 71 IP questionable performance. Houck will create a void in the bullpen (which I’d prefer Winckowski fill over a rotation spot). Walter and Murphy are unknowns. A veteran or two on an MiLB contract might be preferable here…
  11. Ignoring the addition of Duvall for a second, they’re both right but with poor timing. 1. Yes if Barnes clears waivers and another team signs him for $725,000, that lowers the Sox tax burden by $725,000. 2. It is true the Sox will eventually fill that 40 man roster spot with another player who will make a minimum of $725,000, thus negating the savings from part one. (I know this part was done already by Duvall and his $7mill commitment.)
  12. True but the savings is negligible…
  13. I think from here on out, it’s minor league deals….
  14. Rotoworld says Mondesi is still rehabbing his knee and might not be ready for Opening Day
  15. Then replace him with Enmanuel Valdez, whom I unintentionally omitted…
  16. Ok, but who gets DFAd if they add Harrison or Wendle or whoever? The easy answer is Ort, but he’s been the easy answer for a while now and he’s still on board…
  17. Not counting Story, the Sox have 5 middle infielders on the 40 man in Hernandez, Arroyo, Mondesi, Hamilton and Rafaela. They also have Goodrum not on the 40 man. I think they go with that crew, and we don’t see Hamilton getting promoted this year. I think Goodrum is more likely than Hamilton. When Story goes on the 60 day, it will open a slot for one player. Most likely candidates IMO are Tapia, Goodrum and Alfaro…
  18. No. It was filled by someone making $7mill -Adam Duvalll…
  19. Greatest omission in Hall of Fame history. There are rappers and country singers getting inducted into the ROCK AND ROLL Hall of Fame over Tull. That’s like Tom Brady getting into Cooperstown ahead of Todd Helton…
  20. And yet both of those issues have been resolved without utilizing Hamilton. There is no such thing as enough pitching depth…
  21. I think the pitching depth trumped the (very real) infield depth issue…
  22. Was that whole thing really a matter for a Congressional hearing?
  23. I DFA Ort over Darwinzon. I just think a 31yo career minor leaguer - blazing fastball or not - that has been passed over by every team in the Rule 5 draft - stands a good chance at clearing waivers. And it’s not like his limited performance in MLB last year did anything to prove anyone wrong. Of course I would have also protected Ward over Hamilton…
  24. To be clear, I didn’t say it made not protecting him understandable, just that much more. Right now, I think of Ort as occupying his slot. Once they DFA that slot, we have gotten to the point where Ward would have been that much more on the border. In my little hypothetical world, they would have protected Ward and the next in line for a DFA would be Duran or Hamilton. Although a trade for a non-40 man player would serve the same purpose…
  25. Does it matter? He’s not currently on the Phillies 40 man roster, so he wouldn’tneed to be added to Boston’s. And even if he did, he could easily be DFAd and no one is going to claim a $9.25 mill utility player who has repeatedly struggled against MLB pitching. He does have 3.05 years of service time, so he could refuse a minor league assignment. Not sure if he would or even if he should…
