    Positions don’t matter. Did Cincinnati flop on drafting Matt McLain because they already had Elly De La Cruz in the system? Did the selection of McLain mske it a bad move to acquire Noelvi Marte (BA #63, MLB. com #29, BP #29) as the centerpiece of the Luis Castillo trade?

    It’s hard to say what Oakland would want. During their last fire sale, they prioritized quantity over quality. But Sears has 5+ years of control and they’re probably not so likely to move pre-arb actual talent so readily worthy being blown away. Per BTV, a package of Romero, Walter and Perales works. But a lot depends on their evaluation of those players, and how readily they even consider trading Sears. That’s why I think Blackburn is more likely. He’s not as good but only has 1+ year left. He’s only making $1.9mill per B-R, which seems a little low and he’s not a guy that excites anyone. But he’s far easier to get without really breaking the bank. I think he at least checks a couple boxes and like it or not, actually represents an upgrade. I mean, if he keeps Kluber out of the rotation, he’s more than done his job…

    “Different game” has been your take all along. It went from “there was no one else left” to “how bad was he really?” The facts are simple; Barnes had been struggling since mid-August the year before, and Cora repeatedly kept using him as if he wasn’t. He pitched almost exclusively in the 8th inning or later last year. We all wanted him to bounce back. And a couple outings in his old role just to see made sense. I know as a fan we are going to give up on a role for any player quicker than a manager should. But Cora just never seems to until it costs multiple games. It’s like Kike at shortstop this year…

    And yet it was his second lowest WPA of that year, just behind the previous extra inning game. The way you retell it, he was an innocent bystander and just in the wrong place at the wrong time…

    The ghost runner isn’t an excuse. It’s not like the existence of the ghost runner should have been a surprise to Cora. He chose the less effective pitcher for a tougher spot. And given how Barnes pitched in the second half, I don’t even think right-handed hitters offer much justification. Just because Barnes is right-handed doesn’t make him the right guy to face Guerrero, Kirk, etc. with the winning run in scoring position…

    His stuff played up quite well in a bullpen role in 2021. It seems like if the goal was to stretch Houck out, starter would be the best way, as opposed to compromising the bullpen to develop one pitcher…

    Mostly because he hadn’t been an effective MLB relief pitcher for about 6 months at that time. He wasn’t left off the postseason roster because he was just too good…

    You’re sucking away the credibility of the CDT. Even Bloom’s staunchest supporters have called him out on a few things. So now Cora’s questionable use of Barnes in extra innings is the fault of the team for not winning sooner?

    Managing IP is one thing. But Hill had two back-to-back starts where he threw 9IP, 0ER, 2H, 1BB, 10K and only totaled 134 pitches. And he was not happy to be pulled in either game. His IP were ovvermanaged. And to designate Houck - clearly one of the best arms in the pen - as his sole piggyback was a waste of Houck. And the goal isn’t to keep Hill’s stats better. Was over-limiting Hill and tying up Houck as his dedicated RP a good strategy or not?

    1. They only played 6 extra inning games during that stretch. Barnes took 3 10th innings and was ineffective in all of them. 2. In two of the three, he did not finish and was relieved, which means he wasn’t the last reliever available. (Strahm, who was the Sox best RP in the early part of last season, relieved him in one of those two.)

    K/BB is also very good. I like pitchers with high Zone % and low Contact %. That tends me they throw strikes no one can hit…

    But it’s not finished yet, and as they are 1 game behind NY and 2 games being Toronto, those teams might not be as good as you think…
