  1. That might not be the approach. The approach might simply be not spending nine figures and 6-7 years on pitchers who are likely only to be effective for two…
  2. I doubt he Cora thought the top of the lineup Saturday was a better matchup for Jansen than the bottom of the lineup he faced on Friday…
  3. But at some point, where is Schreiber? He was good enough to close games last year. And good enough to be used in every insane critical matchup. Brasier has pitched 4 times since we last saw Schreiber. If Schreiber is hurt or not feeling good, that’s one thing (and an obvious answer here). Or if he’s in Cora’s Disciplinary Doghouse, that’s another. But if he isn’t, what’s going on?
  4. Exactly. In don’t even see how every player necessarily defines a high pressure situation the same. An at-bat one player might feel the pressure in might be mundane to another. The fact that the Yips exist supports the argument that some players feel more pressure in the routine, simple plays. But I will never believe it’s more difficult to face Whitfield-Jansen-Kiermeier in the ninth inning than it is to face Springer-Bichette-Guerrero Jr in the seventh…
  5. Are you on the list of people who say anyone who looks at analytics doesn’t understand the human element of the game? If you need an example, kindly scroll on over to post 3274 on this thread…
  6. I did say 4-1, right? Not 14-1. 4-1 in the 5th inning is not an insurmountable deficit. If Cora challenges Devers’ play at second, Casas’ single brings the tying run to the plate…
  7. And with the benefit of hindsight. Eovaldi had 2 seasons with Boston without significant injury, and wasn’t likely to have many more as he got older. His current two year deal with Texas is probably about the limit any team should sign him for…
  8. Not necessarily. It came up with Bard, who stated his anxiety is present on and off the field. His anxiety could also be social…
  9. The sad part is - every single person that argues “the human element” of the game and insists the game is played by people and not numbers then goes on to lump every player into broad, sweeping categories thus denying any of them are individuals…
  10. It was only 4-1 and there were 2 outs when he brought in the Arsonist (and it could have been 4-2 if Cora knew how to throw a challenge). If you’re saying Cora threw up a white flag at that point, you’re making a solid argument for his firing…
  11. That’s an argument about why there is more pressure in the minors than the majors…
  12. I don’t know what causes the Yips and I am not sure anyone does…
  13. I would think it is extremely possible most closers have learned to ignore that atmosphere through sheer overexposure
  14. 1. You brought mental health into it. 2. You overtly superimposing your psychology on to players and other fans. It only stands to reason when you don’t want to hear the counterpoint. And why are you bringing analytics into this?
  15. I am married to a mental health professional and deal with them constantly due to being a parent of a teenager with SAD…
  16. I like the Cardinals for two reasons: 1. They aren’t the Yankees. 2. They aren’t the Mets.
  17. 1. Not what I said. 2. Do you know anyone with an anxiety disorder? What you call “pressure” has nothing to do with it. It’s all about putting undue pressure on activities that normally don’t have any. Even in baseball. “Steve Blass Disease” was about throwing to the catcher. “The Yips” is about making routine throws to first. If you’re going to say closing is high pressure, it has NOTHING to do with an anxiety disorder…
  18. Bello, Houck, Crawford, Whitlock, Winckowski, Schreiber and Bernardino all have an option remaining. I suspect we’ll see demotions from that list before we see a DFA of either Brasier or Bleier…
  19. Fair, although if it’s more about putting Jansen back on the proverbial horse, it doesn’t necessarily say anything about the rest of the bullpen…
  20. 1. I agree we know nothing about it. That’s why I mentioned the other possibility that you ignored. 2. Anxiety is a mental health disorder that affects a person’s ability to handle everyday mundane activities and actually isn’t related to high pressure situations (where anxieties are quite common).
  21. I doubt it was a matter of trust. I’m 100% positive the reason Jansen was back out there was Cora wanted him to put Friday behind him and move on. Problem is - it clearly backfired…
  22. Dalbec has good numbers vs LHP and makes minimum wage. Finding a taker won’t be difficult. But you’re not getting back anything noteworthy…
  23. Are you sure? Fans get excited. Absolutely. Announcers get excited, because it’s their job to get everyone excited. But how do you figure the players do? They see 162 ninth innings per year. That’s more than the number of Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays combined. And they’ve been seeing them their entire lives. It’s not too hard to believe they view that one game situation differently than you do. I don’t think we as fans necessarily share the mentality with professional athletes, whether we want to or not. And I suspect one of the biggest factors in weeding out the pros from the normies is the ability to ignore pressure…
  24. I will say it odd comically tragic that a 2 game skid can become reality while the previous 35 games are suddenly the outlier…
