  1. Defense can’t stop homers, but Petco can…
  2. Except Binelas, who looks completely overmatched in AA this year with 46 K in 106 PA. And a dazzling 7 walks…
  3. That’s what happens when you field a team with five shortstops behind your pitcher…
  4. I think he’s just running Kluber out there every fifth day and hoping the guy can recapture just an iota of his two Cy Young awards, but realizes his 88mph “fast” ball and lack of command is 100% independent of whoever is squatting behind the dish…
  5. Wacha wasn’t signing for the difference over Kluber. And his $6.5mill AAV is certainly small potatoes, but for four years, he’s a risk. When was the last time he had a good 4 year run? Or three year run? I get passing, and not being happy with Kluber isn’t relevant to that. I also get why the Sox passed Eovaldi, or at least why it makes sense to have done so. But I take Eovaldi for two years over Wacha for 4 ten times out of ten. Because 1. Eovaldi is flat out better and 2. Two years!
  6. Also, it turns out McGuire can hit. Alfaro might be a step down. If the Sox can find a trade partner, that’s fine. But if Alfaro opts out, that’s ok too…
  7. I think pitchers have also learned how not to get destroyed by the pitch clock with runners on base..,
  8. They all want to start or close. But teams need middle relievers too..
  9. The team option is $32mill over two, but the player option is $18.5mill over 3, I believe…
  10. Was Wacha going to sign that deal?
  11. The catcher, being the only player facing that direction, also communicates to the fielders where to play on defense. He’s basically in charge out there, and there’s a good reason who so many managers are former catchers…
  12. That’s a valid point about the pitch clock…
  13. There’s a few reasons. Like that he wasn’t very good in 2019. And that he wasn’t very good in 2020. And he wasn’t very good in 2021. And in 2022, he looked good because of his ERA, but his FIP suggested he wasn’t quite that good. One year? Probably worth a gamble. A multiyear deal and it wouldn’t be long before we were clamoring for his DFA…
  14. Could be a “fielding slump” by McGuire. This is the first year in his career where he has had a negative DRS and more than 80 innings. Certainly you’re not suggesting he forgot how to catch?
  15. I don’t think he wanted Wacha back on a multiyear deal. And I doubt Wacha wanted a one year contract again. Very likely that simple…
  16. My staff assuming everyone not on the 60 day is healthy Starters (order not important): Sale Paxton Whitlock Bello Pivetta Bullpen: CL: Jansen SU: Martin Winckowski Schreiber Houck J Rodriguez Crawford Bernardino Ort (just kidding. More likely Garza for now.)
  17. I let Alfaro walk. He’s not a good defensive catcher and the Sox need McGuire’s glove more than Alfaro’s bat..
  18. I don’t think this of a very accurate statement. Outside of Iglesias (which was 10 years ago), what great fielding shortstop(s) do the Sox dump in favor of a better hitting one? Orlando Cabrera? That was nearly 20 years ago, and really he was not resigned in order to take advantage of a drafting loophole. Besides his replacement was a two time Gold Glove winner (albeit a defensive flop for the Sox)…
  19. The key point being they did bring him back…
  20. Do we want to? The league is no stranger to Alfaro and his bat, yet his deal from Boston was still the best he could get…
  21. Why platoon? Casas has options. Someone needs to get demoted…
  22. If they DFA Kluber, I assume at least one of them is in the rotation, presumably Whitlock. Houck’s issues with starting and facing the opposing lineups are well known and if that means his future is in the pen, that’s not a bad thing. I could see Crawford, but I like him in the bullpen as well. And Pivetta isn’t Kluber, throwing with a rebuilt arm unable to reach the velocities where he was successful. He’s had a rough stretch but is probably just as likely to turn it around and be successful as Crawford is. And if nothing else, his durability is an asset…
  23. What if Wacha’s next two years look like Kluber this year? Is he still a better deal?
  24. 1. Still better than Kluber, if for no other reason than regularly racing the sixth inning. 2. Which high upside younger pitcher looks better? Drohan and his career total of 39 IP above A ball? Matt Dermody? Walter, Murphy and Mata are struggling in AAA right now…
