  2. Exactly. Sometimes in GM Speak, “not available” means “not available for that offer”…
  3. Or the meaning of the word “can’t,” often frequently confused with the word “hasn’t”…
  4. Yes. First of all, neither Contreras nor Gray are “marginal” players, unless your definition of “marginal” means “not superstar”. Contreras OPS+ of 123 makes him a good replacement for the OPS+ of 128 they lost in Bregman. If Contreras is a dumpster dive, what exactly did they lose in Bregman? Sonny Gray was a 3.5 fWAR pitcher brought in to replace Lucas Giolito, a 2.0 fWAR pitcher. So if Gray was a dumpster dive, what was Giolito?
  5. Even without the Sox signing a single free agent yet, it’s not worth complaining about. Six of the top ten MLBTR’s Top 50 Free Agents are still unsigned. And while Tucker and Bellinger are not fits, Bichette, Bregman, Valdez and Suarez all are. Not to mention a few others from the bottom 40 on that list might work as well…
  6. The Sox haven’t been active on the trade front?
  7. So is 162 games from Anthony (or 150) better or worse or equal to 144 games of Devers plus Anthony? And then what about Yoshida? Who from last year are you comparing to our hottest hitter down the stretch?
  8. How about getting to the postseason first? Bieber wasn’t on the Blue Jays roster a year ago today…
  9. So we get 40 games of Ceddanne Rafaela as DH? And some folks say letting him play 2b is a waste of his skills…
  10. Casas might have to, just to prove he can throw a baseball without decapitating himself…
  11. Bregman isnt signing for 3 years and Bichette isnt likely to sign for six…
  12. Neither Hamilton nor Donovan is Marte. I am ok with a 2b, but I think the Sox would be better off with Mayer at SS, Story at 2b and getting a new face for 3b…
  13. And yet the WAR balances out which tells me Donovan is much weaker on the other side. Now if the Sox play Donovan at 3b and Mayer at 2b, maybe thats an improvement…
  14. Is Donovan? His career .615 OPS vs LHP carries over and isnt the product of a couple bad years early on. Hamilton’s only really had two partial seasons and has 550 career PA. You might not think thats enough to hand him the 2b job, and I agree, but isn’t it enough to think maybe Donovan is not the overall improvement we want? He could wind up being an expensive lateral move …
  15. I’m starting to see Joe B’s point. Donovan is 8 months older than Hamilton and averages 3.7 bWAR/162 as opposed to Hamilton’s 3.5 bWAR/162. Neither hits LHP very well. Given the cost to acquire Donovan, what’s the point?
  16. Boston gets: SP Kris Bubic, 2b Brendan Donovan KC gets: OF Jarren Duran St Louis gets : C Blake Mitchell, SP Kendra Chourio, RP Brandon McNeely Then sign a RP and start the season…
  17. My mistake. I read those names reversed…
  18. Over 500 PA, Donovan is worth to about 5 more times on base, but 25 more total bases. That makes up for the SBs. More really, since Donovan would hopefully not be limited to 500 PA…
  19. On this team, I’d prefer Gore over the OF depth…
  20. Sure, if Contreras only gets 120 plate appearances. Donovan is very popular for a reason. Hes a .280/.360 hitter, which makes him an on base upgrade over Duran. I’d gladly take him and I’m not sure why anyone would be hesitant, beyond holding out for Marte…
  21. Getting a SP from any team interested in Duran makes no sense. Maybe something involving a third team like: KC gets OF Jarren Duran Washington gets C Carter Jensen, SP David Shields Boston gets SP Mackenzie Gore That work?
  22. Do scouts recommend value? I think Bloom put the dollars on the table. Not blaming the scouts for overvaluing Duran, who is still very valuable. Just not Ragans level…
  23. I’m sure someone will step up and fill the whiny bitch void left by trading Devers. Sure players like Chapman will take a step or two backwards. But players like Abreu could easily take even more steps forward. But I withhold any real predictions until I see the actual product. At least on paper…
  24. If the Sox are asking for Ragans, there’s a good chance they might be the ones with questionable valuation techniques…
  25. Or an Internet guy who writes articles and thinks he covers sports. I read a great one about Roman Anthony going to the Padres, and it was written like Anthony was a free agent saying stuff like “the lure of San Diego might be too strong” and citing how Anthony will want this move. It completely ignored than Anthony signed with Boston for 8 more years. Never even mentioned it. (The Crochet trade had plenty of buzz beforehand. We even discussed the pros and cons of his acquisition on this forum before the deal was final.)
