  1. Maybe he didn’t think all three would necessarily pan out?
  2. You need to stop paying for free agent steaks…
  3. More like 4 inches, and at that temp it’s pretty light stuff. (<- Talk about optimism!)
  4. Is it higher than the 1 degree Fahrenheit that it is here?
  5. And sign Matt Chapman for 3b! Only worth 9.1 fWAR since signing that deal. But Yoshida played LF, Duvall in CF, Verdugo in RF until Duvall hurt is wrist. And Justin Turner was the Sox DH, where he did have a pretty good year at like age 60, I think…
  6. The big issue with the Mookie trade was the limited interest, which was probably influenced by the inclusion of Price. The Sox had two offers, and the San Diego one was even weaker (plus they wanted Boston to take back Wil Myers, which made zero sense since he was owed nearly as much as Price). No one chanted “keep Brusdar Graterol” louder than I did. But he really didn’t turn out to be any more useful than Wong plus Downs, did he? I heard stories Bloom originally wanted Will Smith, but no idea. Whether or not Friedman planned to extend Betts is immaterial. If the Sox didn’t trade him, he was only under contract for one season. If the Sox didn’t trade Betts, they weren’t going to have him for 13 years. More likely he leaves after one and then signs with LA for 12 years anyway…
  7. Sportrac has the Sox payroll at 6th highest in MLB, behind the Dodgers, Mets, Yankees, Phillies and Blue Jays. While they’re not at their limit yet, the notion of the Sox being cheap might be a bit overblown. They will get problem is, the cheap label often means “not signing free agents”, and there are reasons to not do so that go beyond simple monetary ones…
  8. That’s great but we are really only looking at Gray vs Bello. And let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves - the Sox still have them both. This is really only a conversation about who they could/should trade to round out the infield. They should get a better player for Bello. And they have more than enough depth to cover for losing him. Not sure why the Sox would trade Gray or what they would be able to get for him, but very likely less than they could get for Bello…
  9. Bloom was trying to build the minor leagues into a sustainable pipeline while starting with the 30th ranked system. The easiest abd fastest way to build up the minors is to draft lower risk position players….
  10. I think I’d be ok if he would just change to piker…
  11. Still plenty of time to make additions. The Sox are in a good spot to deal because they have SP depth. In fact, they might even be wise to hold until ST injuries kick in snd teams get a little desperate for SP. Personally I think if they do that, it’s not intentional and just worked out that way. I think they add an infielder before games start…
  12. It might not help the offense, but does it help the team?
  13. The NBA and NFL have better national TV deals than MLB. The NFL in particular relies heavily on it…
  14. My point was the silly notion that teams Don want caps on executives that was suggested. The executives make peanuts compared to the players…
  15. If the Sox had done nothing, the position that Breslow bungled the negotiations becomes more supportable. But it is possible his attitude was “If Bregman doesn’t want our deal, we move on to Ranger Suarez.” I have no problem with that…
  16. They do have a full lineup now, but it’s not optimized defensively. If the season started tomorrow, we’d probably see Rafaela at 2b with Anthony-Duran-Abreu in the OF. Or back to Hamilton/Romy at 2b with Yoshida on the bench. Campbell might even get another shot at some point. It’s not a great offense, but it’s better than last year’s injury-fueled postseason lineup. The biggest improvement is at 1b, with Contreras over Toro.
  17. The Jays fortified themselves? They lost a 3.5 bWAR infielder but added a pitcher coming off a 1.1 bWAR season. The Sox lost a 3.5 bWAR infielder but replaced him with a pitcher coming off a 4.7 bWAR season. Why isn’t that fortifying anything?
  18. Using WAR as a guideline, he was almost identical in value to Duran last year… Duran: 4.7 bWAR, 3.8 fWAR Rafaela: 4.7 bWAR, 3.7 fWAR
  19. And if we signed one of those guys, fans would be bitching about the missing “#2 starter”. Much easier to get an infielder at this point…
  20. Are teams signing Scouting Directors and Vice Presidents of Player Personnel to nine-figure salaries now?
  21. If you’re going by what Pierzynski said, it was money. Pierzynski said Boston: 1) made an insufficient offer 2) didn’t counter when presented with the Cubs’ offer 3) did not include a no-trade clause. Its on YouTube, and Pierzynski - who definitely knows more about free agency and negotiations than me, but that doesn’t make him an “insider” for this case - brings nothing we didn’t already know…
  22. And next thing you know, your house is full of Cubs’ fans! (See, that’s funny because my house is full of Cubs’ fans… )
  23. Nope. Is that necessarily a bad thing? I mean, What if he was only Plan A because he was cheaper? Just because it was Plan A didn’t mean it was the only possibly path to success. The fact that they clearly had a Plan B tells you they didn’t think Bregman or bust…
  24. What kind of praise did you expect for offering a player $35mill a year to play third base?
