Our thoughts on it are immaterial. Cora does not consult me on this stuff, and I have a feeling that you’re not in his contacts list either. I wasn’t subtle about my feelings that he felt Devers was incapable of playing 1b. Has Cora ever refused to move a player’s position for this reason? And he’s made lots of weird moves, some of which were short term necessities, and some that he let needlessly linger. And we all do know from watching Kike at SS, Cora doesn’t always let horrific defensive play remove you from your position. Devers probably has a fragile ego, and I question use of the word “probably” there. He was probably insulted and frustrated, and felt it was handled poorly. Agreed. But also, he is an adult, and is paid quite well in a non-decision-making role. Whether or not is the right decision from a baseball standpoint is not his call. If the attitude is all praise and blame falls on upper management (I.e. Breslow), certainly understandable. The buck stops here, and Breslow is far from blameless. But i can’t excuse Devers for handling it in a manner so petulant. My question isn’t about the communication issue, which should be reparable among mature adults. But rather how did it get down to a trade? Did Devers demand one? Or did Breslow simply decide he was through with Devers and make that call himself?

I was looking at MLB only, where metrics can help determine is his play was worthwhile. He has played a lot of SS. Is he any good? His MLB sample is too small to know and he plays for a team that could have moved him for reasons other than his performance (like the existence of Bobby Witt Jr….

You’ve always been pretty adamant about silencing them. Lets review some possibilities 1. Didn’t think it was a good idea to make the change midseason. Maybe, but it wasn’t really made on the fly. They did have to get someone to play 1b. Whether or not Breslow had lined up enough AAAA players was immaterial at this point. 2. Didn’t think Devers could handle 1b. Unlikely. Cora has thrown players around into new positions before with little to no experience at them. Defense never felt like a priority with him. 3. Devers was not easy to deal with. We know it to be true. From his negotiations to the alleged promise of 3b to the difficulty moving to DH. The question is - is this why Cora didn’t talk to him? 4. Other?

If I can hold him, I do. But as I think (re:know) Boston will be buying this deadline unless they completely collapse in the next 2 weeks, I have to think he is solid trade bait as well. MLB numbers in a limited sample are not great, but a year ago he was a consensus top 15 prospect and that will carry some weight. Teams might ask for Arias first, and maybe Breslow prefers that. Who knows? But I sell Mayer before Arias. I threw out a Mayer/Phillips option for Pena. Can’t speak for Houston, but they will need a SS if they deal Peña…

You really despise this roster. It seems like you would DFA about half of them and then trade the other half just to get rid of them…

A catcher that can hit would be nice, but the staff is familiar with Narvaez and Wong. Only catcher to consider is one that can DH tjis year and is controlled for next (plus?), but at that point it’s probably too specific. A LF to replace Duran would be ideal. Preferably a slugger but Taylor Ward’s elite OBP this year is tempting. And if Jeremy Peña can be had, that makes sense too.

I think a short term SS like Peña makes sense. Push Story to 2b upon his return, and creates a convenient bridge to Arias/Mayer.

Assuming/hoping the Sox stay off the MLB active roster for trades, except Duran and maybe Mayer. More likely the Eyanson/ Witherspoon/ Wehunt /Phillips crowd is where the trade bait comes from…

Well, he’s a good third baseman. Lesser at 2b and his SS experience is inconsequential. The ceiling is there. He was a 6 fWAR player ladt year. But it’s rare, as in he has no other seasons above 2fWAR. (He should top that mark this year.) He’s not an awful choice or anything, but if the goal is “better offense” I think other options make more, especially since KC has no reason to move him. I prefer Ward, Jeffers and Peña, for example. And I think replacing Duran might be more important than replacing Seigler…

Do you think Garcia is? Seigler’s might fall of, but the Sox do have 3 MI’s in the IL. Even if Garcia is an upgrade over Seigler, how much of one? I could see the Sox going for a leadoff-type 2b, but hopefully it’s someone like Matt Shaw (availability in question).

So you are stating that the reason Devers refused to play first base was because he watched Arroyo in right field and he watched Franchy at 1b? I’d be absolutely shocked if either of those two entered his mind. He didn’t say “I’m not going to first because I’ve never played it before and I’m uncomfortable.” But he did say “do they expect me to play every position?” That sounds more like a man just sick of being moved than a man worried about learning to play 1b. And if it was done for no reason, it becomes more understandable. But it wasn’t. And if the argument is “Breslow should have gotten someone better than Toro in the off-season, thats actually not realistic. Any backup 1b signing on to be a backup is going to be Toro-caliber or worse. The ceiling in that room is Rowdy Tellez. On the other hand, the Sox did have a serviceable DH in Yoshida coming back that needed a place to play. At 5’4” or whatever, he wasn’t an option for 1b, although he reportedly practiced it without whining. And getting both in made the best Sox lineup with their current roster. I believe Devers was upset at being removed from 3b, and didn’t care why he was asked to move again. He probably felt disrespected, and frustrated. And not because he watched Franchy struggle at 1b…

At best youre speculating. And that can work both ways. Maybe getting back on the field makes him a better hitter? You have used a similar argument for Duran. Romy is a role player that has never had a full time job and had only 20 games at first base in his career. And Cora clearly didn’t think he was a full time option because Cora had that option and didnt use it. Toro is the type of player you get on a minor league deal. What did you expect? Freddie Freeman to sit in Worcester waiting for an injury?
