    You’ve done nothing but condone Devers’ behavior, including in the very response where you say you didn’t. First base has been a mess. And the Franchy Cordero/Abraham Toro types were never going to be anything but ineffective stopgaps (although Toro had his moments). If you’re saying you think Devers was justified, you’re saying you believe the right path was the only one left - Abraham Toro. It was like May 8th, so no one was trading the Sox a 1b. At that point in the season, only in-house players are an option. (Was Devers also justified in saying it was Breslow’s job to go get a 1b on May 8th?) The bottom line is Devers was asked to help his team due to injury and he refused. Many think this makes him a selfish player. Do you think he was acting as a team player or a selfish one?

    And saying it weakened two positions is misleading. Devers was still going to bat. The choice for the Sox lineup was Devers (at 1b) and Yoshida (at DH) or Devers (at DH) and Abraham Toro (at 1b). The first one is the better option..

    In the standings, the Sox are barely better than a team already selling. Worth noting that dealing the perennially injured McCullers might not equate to a complete white flag. It might just be moving an annual headache to another team…

    If Sacra-Vegas is dealing Langeliers, it’s for cash reasons. Doubtful they want to take back a cumbersome contract. But part of me thinks they want to debut in Vegas with some stars and therefore prefer to keep Kurtz, Langeliers, Rooker and Butler on their squad…

    The plan was Casas. The crazy part is no one ever said his move to 1b would be permanent. Certainly no one knew how long Casas would be out….

    If anything, I think Gray’s surplus value is high. I think/hope the Sox prioritize LF/DH over 2b. Seigler is doing a good job and the Sox have a glut of middle infielders on the IL that might come off…

    Why not a left fielder? Yoshida and Romy can platoon at DH until Roman returns. But get Duran out of the lineup (and possibly out of Boston) and get a decent hitter into LF. Live the ideas of Jeffers or Langeliers behind the plate. Langeliers might require Arias. Not Adell. He is still well below the extremely casual requirement of a .720 OPS…

    The Sox knew he was not going to stay at 3b and eventually move to first when he signed his contract, which was why their first offer resembled the extension Matt Olson had just signed with Atlanta. No one in the organization thought of signing him to that deal because he played a great 3b, or even an acceptable 3b. They signed him because he was an elite hitter and because Bogaerts and Betts left for very little. Moving to 1b appeared to always be a Sox goal, but Devers refused to accept it. The Sox weren’t asking him to become a great 3b; they were asking him to be the same hitter that he had always been, but as a 1b, like many players before him had done…
