  1. The Green Monster was the main reason I always felt Matt Kemp was a horrible fit for the Sox, even in his heyday. He rips powerful line drives that never looked like they would clear the monster. I think he would have set the tram record for wall ball singles, which isn't a bad thing but also not why the Sox would have acquired him....
  2. All of this is only true if Machado finishes 2018 with the Orioles or whatever team acquires him before the season starts. If the extremely likely situation where no team meets Baltimore's pre-season demands are not meet and he isn't traded happens, he probably gets dealt in July and there will be no qualifying offer. The biggest flaw in the QO system is the lack of compensation for teams that lose free agents, which will make Baltimore a motivated seller at the deadline. ..
  3. I would disagree. The opt out clause helps teams immensely. I'd rather see Price give the Sox three good, well-paid years and then move on rather than aging poorly and spending his last year or two as a financial sinkhole that limits the Sox from making moves and retaining younger players. Any deal over 5 years for a player 30 or over without an opt-out clause is a huge mistake, IMO.
  4. Tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick.... tick....
  5. Unless Price opts out, Hanley's option fails to vest, or they deal Porcello. Two of those 3 should do it. But this is all hypothetical anyway...
  6. Similar to the contract Adrian Beltre received from the Red Sox, but only for one year with one option. The issue might be getting the player to sign. Someone like Harper might want the longer deal in case of injury, and he might not want to be hurt and making a paltry $1mill.
  7. I think he's thinking about Duffy as the bullpen arm...
  8. I don't think Duffy is a the trade target to pitch in the pen. This team doesn't need more left handed starters. But I do like Duffy as a pitcher. I'm all lso not wild about Benintendi add a center fielder and prefer either Bradley or Betts over him out there. But I do wonder how adamant JD Martinez is about not wanting to DH. Is this a serious preference or just a negotiating ploy? I will say, if the rumors of wanting more years are accurate, not wanting to DH would be a very, very bad negotiating tactic...
  9. Probably not, but his injury history should be more troubling than two post-season starts
  10. No one understands the Quarterback Rating. And the NBA has some complex ones now too...
  11. Why don't you think so? Please don't say because of his two post-season starts against Houston. Now if you say his history or arm troubles, I can see that...
  12. I can say with absolute certainty it will have a greater effect than signing Jay Bruce. And it should...
  13. Back when we all ended a lot of sentences with the phrase "just once before I die"
  14. Not to mention, there is a definite PR value and ticket sales impact in signing/acquiring players of this magnitude. Jay Bruce is far less enticing to ticket sales than Yu Darvish...
  15. Not to mention how minuscule differences in BA get magnified to the point where people think they are enormous. Or primarily using ERA to evaluate pitchers, knowing full well it can be heavily dependent on team defense. (I do this, too.)
  16. One of two teams, I believe. And the only one in the American League... Nationals/Expos are the other. Am I forgetting anyone?
  17. Yes. All players on the 40-man roster are considered major leaguers. Options allow teams to send 15 of them to the minors...
  18. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/print.jsp?ymd=20110329&content_id=17188016 This explains it better than I ever could...
  19. I'd be ok with 5 years. But part of me is hoping he ages like Edwin Encarnacion. ..
  20. I think there's a good chance Holt handles the majority of 2b until Pedroia returns, assuming he's recovered. There was really no other reason to offer him arbitration, unless Dombrowski figured it might be too costly to re-sign a player coming off a career worst season and a concussion. ..
  21. Arguably it's a museum and not really a club, although elected members do apparently feel different. I think it gets too personal at that point. Although I also think the BBWAA has made some really questionable selections as well. Not sure why the Hall itself can't handle the process internally...
  22. Isn't that essentially the Veteran's Committee? They almost never vote anyone in. Santo was elected by the Golden Era Committee or Golden Age Committee or something like that, and I'm not sure who's on that one. Electing Santo was the first thing thry did upon formation...
  23. Possibly Yu Darvish or Jake Arrieta if they are thinking of going in a different direction as well
  24. No. Rule 5 apples to players not on the 40-man roster. Options apply to players who are. It would be closer to a minor league free agent situation.
  25. I don't think an invitation to ST is relevant. He can't be on the 40-man roster and can't be on a minor league roster without clearing waivers, regardless of ST invites. I'm not sure whether or not he can go through ST with the AAA team. But even if he can, ST is going to end and he can only play in Boston without being exposed to the waiver process. And he will get claimed. Some GM somewhere will see him out there and think "Free backup catcher with actual potential. Thank you."
