  1. So why is unknown Aaron Boone a potential liability in NY but unknown Alex Cora such a strength for Boston?
  2. Would the Sox have been better off with Hanley and Sandoval or Gonzalez and Crawford?
  3. MLB also operated using a list of banned substances, and several players circumvented that rule by having new substances developed that were not banned. While one can argue it violated the spirit of the law, it did not violate the letter of the law. Bonds is a prime example of this. It's also a viable argument that it did not even violate the spirit of the law, since baseball's drug policy at the time was geared to removing cocaine from the game, not steroids. This policy, which included illegal steroids and all illegal drugs, was created to clean up the image of a game tainted by the Pittsburgh Drug Trials, by Steve Howe and his seven lifetime suspensions, by Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden, and by the four KC Royals who spent an off-season in prison, among other notable instances. Preventing home runs was not the goal...
  4. Auto correct sucks and is not in tune with MLB players from Worcester. You should see how it butchers Tanyon Sturtze...
  5. They might not add a top of the rotation pitcher. They are running into the biggest problem with having lots of good prospects - teams (especially small market teams like Pittsburgh who cannot afford to make mistakes) only want the guys at the top, Clint Frazier is maybe worth slightly more that Chavis in a trade. Maybe. The Pirates are rightly holding out for the guy they want (Torres), and any team offering a pitcher equal to or better than Cole will probably do the same, unless that pitcher has one year of control left.
  6. Not to mention it isn't going to be easy to replace Bradley and Bogaerts. Most of the criticisms from them seems to be based solely on 2017. Even Pomeranz has been terrific and won't be easy to replace. And if you look at his 2016, you might notice 2017 was NOT a one-season wonder. (Unless you only look at W-L record). Really the easiest guy to replace will probably be Kimbrel...
  7. If Thornburg is healthy, he could probably replace Kimbrel now and no one would notice the difference...
  8. Benintendi and Devers will not be free agents in 3 years. If the Sox spend heavily between now and when Betts and Sale reach free agency, it is not likely they keep both, assuming they can actually afford either. Of the two, they should let Sale walk. He is less likely to maintain his performance well into his next deal...
  9. True, although it has lead to some inaccurate stories...
  10. Not what I meant. The Red Sox do not have a GM and haven't since Mike Hazen left. We have a President of Baseball Ops who handles everything himself. Although this off-season he hasn't done all that much...
  11. But... but ... but we were all told the luxury tax would not be an issue this season...
  12. And no one else's does. All those other teams are so medically adept and lucky to be immune to injury...
  13. Good thing you don't care who the GM, considering the team doesn't have one..
  14. Actually I'm thinking Matt Garza might be an option. He's very tight with Price and sometimes things like that do become a factor, especially for pitchers like Garza who have never won anything and are watching their careers wind down.
  15. Elias has some potential with that deadly curve ball of his. Haley is about as replacement level as it gets...
  16. Or non-existant. I hope he plans to shore up 2B. REally I have very little confidence in Hernandez, and his only actual move was the completely untried wild card Esteban Quiroz. We might need someone to play 2B all year if things don't work out with Pedroia, and at least half a season even if they do. Not really sure why this is being ignored so. My only real hope here is that DD is not being open and honest, which I don't expect from him anyway, and he does have another plan for 2B, be it Nunez or Kendrick or ??? On the other hand, he really needs to make a move at some point. All of this waiting for Boras to blink on JD Martinez should in no way impact a lot of other needs. Like signing some pitchers to minor league deals for depth purposes, getting a 2B stopgap/starter, maybe signing one of the remaining Braves' refugees.
  17. Absolutely true, The rationale isn't always good, but it is always there. Sometimes it is obvious, but sometimes it is a lot less clear to us as fans, despite what we think we know.
  18. The Red Sox absolutely need a pitcher, but free agency is such a bad way to get one unless you have identified a clear undervalued candidate. Hitters are more likely to be worth it for long term deals, and even that is no guarantee. The best option might be to sign Martinez and deal Bradley for a pitcher...
  19. The Giants' acquisition of Longoria has actually increased the likelihood of nunez returning to Boston (assuming DD has any interest)...
  20. So basically.. probation...
  21. Really it all depends on what Price wants. If he only wants money, he probably stays unless his agent thinks he cna get him more. If he wants to play for another team regardless, he is gone. Not everyone makes all the decisions on money. If that was the case, Tanaka would be a free agent right now...
  22. If it gets to the point where his elbow is scaring GMs and failing team physicals, he has already opted out...
  23. If it gets to the point where his elbow is scaring GMs and failing team physicals, he has already opted out...
  24. A player who goes off just before free agency. ..
  25. So they signed him just long enough to convince Manny Machado to join him in Cleveland. ..
