  1. Rusney Castillo is in a horrible position. Even if he hits in AAA, his contract will be next to impossible to move. And the Sox can't call him up without pushing or exceeding the tax limit in a manner that cripples their maneuverability....
  2. From some Nike(?) commercial 20 years ago featuring Greg Maddox, Tom Glavine, and Msrk McGwire in a rare commercial using MLB players. ..
  3. That operates on the assumption that either Vazquez or Leon play well enough to look likr s viable trade candidate. If both look like prototypical defense-first backup catchers, which is certainly possible, how often are players like that acquired by rebuilding teams? Swihart could be dealt, but that further weakens the farm...
  4. Way too early to even think about deadline concerns. Any one of over a dozen players can get injured and bump "extra reliever" way down on the priority list. Really the only thong the Sox should do until camp breaks is bolster the pitching depth at both starter and reliever with minor league deals. And while I get this is an unpredictable practice, it's getting a little disappointing that the Sox haven't been doing this at all. Granted it's been a slow process league wide, but other teams ate doing it. But hey we got Brian Bogusevic on a minor league deal. Maybe he can be converted to a pitcher, which would make sense. Hopefully he wasn't signed to play the outfield. He can't hit, but he does have a serious CANNON for an arm..
  5. True wrestling has a fanbase but I don't think its lack of popularity is rooted in the civility of the coaches. Golf is about as tame of a game as there is, but it's immensely popular. I think the main reason true wrestling (which I call it to distinguish it from WWE) isn't very popular is it doesn't make for exciting television. That's not a knock on the sport. But really, how often do you see it televised? Even during the Olympics, where archery and curling get air time, wrestling rarely does. EPSN will cover everything from baseball to poker to Scrabble, but you never see the NCAA wrestling chamionship televised. I think it's a combination of relatively low amounts of action and an unfamiliar scoring system that prevents the sport from being more mainstream. I like wrestling. It was the most popular sport in my high school and college. But I do think the nature of the sport just isn't what John Q. Public wants to watch on TV. And a lack of a television audience does a lot to hinder the popularity of the sport...
  6. The biggest issue with wrestling is once you get above the college level, it becomes very difficult to follow. The most popular version at a professional level is more show business than sport....
  7. Doesn't racing alone seal the deal? I think most races held outside of county fairs and rural festivals are sports....
  8. Im here for you. I really wanted to keep Gnip Gnop in there because its funnier. But alas, not so timeless. I work with a Canadian fellow who insists any activity where players or teams take turns (football, baseball) are "games" but a sport is an activity where the ball is out there for everyone, like (primarily) hockey, but also like in basketball, soccer, and of course foosball and quiddage...
  9. While I agree auto racing id a sport, trying to defend it as one by highlighting the physical stresses involved does make me laugh. You have to be in pretty good shape to survive basic training. But that doesn't make it a sport...
  10. Well, my goal was to simply disprove your definition, not to create a comprehensive list. My original post included Gnip Gnop, which fit your definition of a sport but I felt might be too obscure of a reference for some of the younger readers.
  11. Playing a different position doesn't make him a prospect more likely to break out. And really, with the exception of home runs, could the numbers for Devers and Longhi be any closer? When Longhi does hit his power stroke, he could easily catch or surpass Devers...
  12. II think golf is a sport. I just think it's an awful one. It's on the very short list of sports I have no desire to either watch or play. Golf and auto racing. That's the list...
  13. By your logic, foosball and jacks are sports...
  14. If Wright is too inconsistent for you, how is Pomeranz acceptable?
  15. I don't think Pablo was a factor here. The Red Sox traded Moncada because there was absolutely no way to get Sale without giving up at least one of Moncada or Benintendi. If the White Sox wanted Devers at all, and they might have, he clearly wasm't a "must have," as they were willing to take Kopech and/or Basabe instead. In fact, Devers still doesn't impress me much. I just can't get excited over anyone in A ball. Let's se how he does this year in AA. Personally, I have more faith in Longhi this year...
  16. It was a pretty dumb trade to begin with. Granted, it was done with 2017/2018 in mind, but his inexperience as a starter really didn't make him an ideal candidate at the present, let alone going forward...
  17. I'd like to see either Pomeranz in the bullpen (where you can never have too much help) or Rodriguez in AAA. I don't see why most people are so down on Steven Wright in the rotation...
  18. So then we release Abad, who won't be earing his money anyway, and call up Robby Scott. And we get better on 3 roster spots. See how easy this is...
  19. I trade Buchholz for Smith before signing Moreland any day. But while I don't like the Moreland solution over a few other alternatives, I really can't sit here and pretend this particular choice of stopgap lefty bat is going to be the death nail of the 2017 season...
  20. There was chatter about Pomeranz moving to the pen to reduce his IP workload and clear up the logjam. ..
  21. As a wise man once said "baseball is the best sport because you don't have to be in shape to play." Undoubtedly he was watching John Kruk or Pete Incaviglia or Cecil Fielder or.... at the time...
  22. Agree. AS is the most important level. All the lesser players from the multiple levels of A ball have been weeded out. And AAA isn't really so much for development anymore, as the average age is usually over 27 and the teams are loaded eith ex-major leaguers on minor leaguedeals serving as depth.
  23. Coffee. No cream. No sugar. If I can go 86 years without a World Series, I can handle the occasional bitterness in my morning beverage. ..
  24. They do make up heights and weights, but everyone does that to the point where I wonder if it's stipulated in contracts. I've seen Pedroia listed as 5'10". Sure he is...
