When was the last interesting off-season?

No it won’t. Unless the Sox deal Bradley without taking money back.

The bullpen wasn’t a huge problem last year given what they were asked to do, but the one guy who bothered me was Barnes and his complete ineffectiveness on consecutive days. Workman actually was very effective in the closer role. I have mixed emotions about Chavis, and I actually hope they can get a LHH compliment. But it will probably be limited to Matt Adams or (ugh) Greg Bird due to the budget limits...

Just basing it on the posts out here. And that I’ve seen these same criticisms before, back in 2012 when Cherington wasn’t allowed to spend. Not to mention every time I hinted at this even before Bloom was hired, I received numerous responses “Why are you trying to save Henry’s money?”

Rumors might make fans happier, but until they become moves, they’re still nothing. Bloom has been involved in a lot of Price talks per that same rumor mill. Reportedly with the White Sox, Padres, Blue Jays, and Angels. Do these rumors move the needle?

Let’s say we start the season with Chavis at 1b. And the bullpen has Barnes, Hembree, Walden, Hernandez, Taylor, Workman and two others (Velasquez? Brasier? Brewer? Osich? Weber?). Would those be horrible situations?

I know it seems like the Sox are lagging, but they aren’t alone. The Dodgers have added Blake Treinen and nothing else. The Reds signaled their all in this year by trading for Bauer last July. Have they made any moves this off-season? Have the Cubs done anything? What about the Astros? Or the Phillies? These teams are all allegedly contenders. It seems like the Braves and Blue Jays have made all the moves...

We’ve had other GMs who were brought in for player development, like Dan Duquette. But we also learned that sometimes when those low budget guys do get a budget, they get a bit overwhelmed by it...

But then you have to replace Price. So taking back $13-18mill isn’t necessarily enough. Price was worth 2.3 fWAR last year, so replacing him would cost roughly what Tanner Roark (2.0 fWAR) got - $12mill AAV. This means the cost of taking back, say, Myers only saves the Sox about $6mill towards the tax - and means we have to watch Myers suck for 3 years. The Sox could do better just trading Barnes for actual (potential?) contributors and make up about half of that....

Especially for a fan base who only understands spending. It’s unpopular when the GM isn’t allowed to do so...

That’s why I think Betts is their best bet. If you have to include $60mill to deal Price, it isn’t worth it. Replacing him will cost the remaining $11mill per year. Or more. If you deal Betts, you might not have to pay anything down and might even get back a good (not great, like Betts) player or two back in return...

It’s actually pretty sad that you have to keep brining up those titles from the 1920s and 30s, considering all the players are long dead. I used to laugh at Bears’ fans, who desperately cling to the ‘85 Bears and their title. Yankee fans make them look less sad...

Despite the subject matter, I would have put “61*” a lot higher. Even with the horrible casting of Anthony Michael Hall as Whitey Ford...

And while we make these mock proposals, the reality of this team right now appears that their biggest need depends on who they trade away to cut salary. They have a rotation and would only need a SP if they deal a Price or Eovaldi (unless they want to get Eovaldi’s injury replacement). They have the whole bullpen back from last year. They have a starting catcher, a starting infield, and a starting outfield. And the biggest weakness at any of those spots might be Chavis at 1b. (I do expect a platoon mate.) But beyond a LHH first baseman and someone to pitch when Eovaldi can’t, what are the immediate needs? Just dumping cash...

The Sandlot tops the list, despite my knowing Babe Ruth did not have any teammates who looked like James Earl Jones, if you get my drift. Bull Durham was great. Major League was a complete ripoff of Bull Durham. You just know that movie pitch was “Why don’t we make a movie with the characters from Bull Durham, but in the majors?” A severely underrated baseball movie is “Little Big League.”

And while most of america was screaming "Run! Marshawn Lynch!" I get why Carroll called for the pass. One of the biggest factors was Belicheck NOT calling a timeout, so Carroll was obviously thinking "I get either a game-winning TD or the clock stops, something he did not get from a run. But when the pass got intercepted, suddenly we all forgot that logic went out the door. I don't think Carroll made a horrible call (and later when I learned Lynch was like 1 for 7 from one yard line helped justify it), but Butler just made a great play..

Agreed. Doctors are human beings and not perfect. But let's not pretend that lessens the risk that was Eovaldi...

Well, when unloading salary, you do need a dance partner. Also, it's only December 28th. Opening day is several hours away. Dombrowski didn't sign JD Martinez until late February, and he wasn't even looking to trim salary. The bulk of the players the Sox have missed out on were the ones they weren't going to sign anyway...

I saw where you were trying to go. But the guy has missed extensive time with loose bodies on multiple occasions, and whether or not their is structural damage down the road doesn’t change that his time in Boston is set and finite, and that he has had those other injuries as well. It’s almost like you’re trying to credit Eovaldi for finding new, less destructive ways to injure himself in between his “serious injuries.” Way to be creative, Nate!

And whether it was pitching-related or not, or even to his non-throwing arm, a lost season is just that. Dombrowski paid heavily to get Eovaldi to pitch for 4 seasons. There is no rebate on season one, and Nate is a year older now...
