  1. I cut the Yankees some slack. They overcame a lot of injuries and Cashman did great finding everything but SP. But also, I’m glad they’re done. Not gonna lie...
  2. After the 2000 season. And he was awesome...
  3. The grass is always greener, I guess. So you’re arguing that the Sox should replace the career .796 OPS of Benintendi with the career .797 OPS of Castellanos? And only for a mere $10 million more per year?
  4. Also true. And not in conflict with what I said...
  5. Move to LA or Atlanta...
  6. Dombrowski was reportedly offered Puig for Bradley straight up 2 years ago and rejected it. Which means at least 2 GMs preferred Bradley over Puig...
  7. The Sox will probably have neither next year...
  8. No doubt. But we also might have reached the point with Wright where the 40 man roster spot was more valuable than the player...
  9. Nothing accounts for the human element worse than a human. There’s a reason eye witness testimony is considered unreliable...
  10. Sonny Gray did pitch poorly for the Yankees, and the press/etc. always said Sonny couldn’t handle the pressure. But when Sonny was on the road - pitching in front of fans who wanted him to fail - wasn’t he still a Yankee? Maybe it was Yankee Stadium itself and it’s physical dimensions that didn’t work out. I think fans like to blame mental toughness a lot. It’s a Giant Killer thing...
  11. Sure there are different kinds. And they’re not all equal, either...
  12. Exactly. To me, THAT guy - plus the guy whose struggling to convince his wife not to leave him because she thinks he;s cheating. But some guy putting on a Red Sox uniform? As the source of his pressure?
  13. That’s really awesome. For years even on BDC, I argued that the real “high pressure” wasn’t what people kept telling me. I kept hearing “playing in Boston” is such high pressure. Or playing in the postseason is such high pressure? My argument was you always face the most pressure in the minors, because if you don’t stand out, you stay there. And that gets more and more difficult if you have a wife and kids. Anyone catch that article about the minor leaguer releasing his taxes? And revealing that each year he played he lost money? But I was always told “Nope. No pressure in the minors. Only millionaires in Boston feel pressure! Because Dan Shaughnessy or Gerry Callahan might be mean to them.” (Despite half the team probably disregarding all English language media since it isn’t their first language.) Yet I have thoughts like this, while others think “high pressure = Boston” and “clutch = postseason” and that I’m just a stats guy who doesn’t understand the human element...
  14. Schilling, Morris, Ortiz. They’re usually the big names for clutch. But to me, they were all players who were great all the time in high leverage and low leverage. For real clutch, I like Pat Tabler. Tabler was a journeyman corner INF/OF player whose career was about 4300 plate appearances with an OPS of.724. But for some reason, with the bases loaded, his OPS ballooned up to 1.198. Now THAT was a hitter who excelled in key situations beyond his normal abilities...
  15. But those are never the clutch hits fans talk about..,
  16. Signing Puig and Castellanos is unlikely to reduce payroll...
  17. No. I’m saying that the championship involved the two best. It’s what we all want in every sport. Then we get it and people cry “FIX!!!”
  18. There was one instance of a ref fixing games for gambling purposes. But these conspiracy theories always have the exact same flaw. How do you explain why no one has ever talked about it? Every ref, every coach, every NBA head office intern. No one ever said a thing. And this is the NBA, not the CIA. It’s not like they have any leverage or can make any threats to ensure silence...
  19. To me, if you’re going to attack the definition of “high leverage”, it might be best to not use equally undefined terms like “clutch”, which has all the same question marks...
  20. LOL B-R has a definition on their site. But think of it as an opportunity for a clutch hit...
  21. Or... crazy thought... those two players were capable of carrying teams...
  22. I am so proud. It’s almost like you’re quoting my game plan if I were commissioner. For years, teams played doubleheaders every Sunday. The only reason the practice stopped was to increase gate revenue, as it was two games for the price of one. But besides shortening the season, it would be easier on ESPN. Today, they schedule Sunday night games before the season and hope the games are relevant. And if they’re not, they sometimes reschedule games and screw over the fans. But if everyone was already playing Sunday night, they could just Fedex ARod and company to whatever city had the most important game...
  23. 1. They had day playoff games for years, but you’re only considering one coast. Want a 1pm game in NY? That’s a 10am game in LA. 2. I don’t think allowing richer teams to spend even more will grow the game outside of maybe in 3 or 4 cities. The small market teams are already at a spending handicap, and the way to expand interest isn’t to magnify it. Want to grow the game? Keep everything in the CBA as is, but add a salary floor that prevents pocketing revenue. Install a program where revenue sharing can only be spent on free agency or signing bonuses, and if you don’t spend it, you lose it. In short, financial penalties for those who pocket money...
  24. Because not every child lives on the east coast?
  25. MLB already has more parity than any other sport. All teams win 40% of the time and lose 40% of the time, and the ones that don’t aren’t outside that range by much. That would be like the entire NFL finishing between 6-10 and 10-6 every year. MLB also has more teams win titles than the NBA or NFL. The NBA in particular is pathetic in this regard, with only 10 different teams winning titles since 1974 and only 11 since 1962. MLB has had 10 different champions in what? The last 12 or 13 years?
