  1. Except indulging in light fantasy...
  2. Ummm... not my first choice. I thought something else might immediately leap into the minds of the Patriots’ fans on this board. One little super moment...
  3. I could engage in the other option for exciting baseball talk. “Let’s do something, Bloom!!” Satisfied?
  4. Exactly. Pollock, for example. I’d only even consider Hosmer if Sam Diego really sweetened the pot, which would probably require more sweetening than they are willing to add. There are a few others I wouldn’t mind. Posey or Belt, for example. Robinson Cano is one I think might work, except the AAV savings isn’t that great. But if the Mets took Bradley and added the right pieces with Cano, I could be intrigued...
  5. Unless Nate isn’t a disaster for all 3 years. One bad year doesn’t ruin him as an option...
  6. There are some bad contracts I’d trade Price for, but I draw that line before Hosmer. And I only consider Odor and Myers options because both are young enough to bounce back somewhat...
  7. Hosmer is ower $63mill over the next 3 seasons. After which, he can opt out or collect $38mill for the final 3 seasons. The opt out is a tough call here. The guy is a league average hitter and weak defender who basically hit free agency at the right time. He might be a 6 yer commitment if the Sox deal Price for him, and they will probably be 6 steadily declining years. At what point in these bad contract trade dels does it just make sense to hold on to Price and instead trade just one year of Mookie Betts if they need to get under the luxury tax limit. There is a point where it does make sense to deal Betts over Price, believe it or not. Hosmer is one time when I would say it does. There are a lot of bad contracts I would take back in a Price swap. Not Hosmer. If he doesn't op out, he is in a Sox for 6 years. Before the Red Sox make a long term commitement to Eric Hosmer, who is a league average hitter and weak fielder at 1b.
  8. We all wanted him taken out. This is despite 1) how horrific the Sox bullpen was all year long, and a recent hot streak in the post-season by a couple pitchers didn't change this and 2) no one knew anything about how the Sox relievers were actually doing that day. Grady Little did know this, however. Sometimes, when these incredibly obvious decisions don't go the way people think they should, there is a very good reason. As Pete Carroll would attest...
  9. The one 3 years from now. No matter what year it is when you ask, they're going to be ready 3 years from then...
  10. Eovaldi, definitely. I had no passion on Sale one way or the other at the time of his re-signing...
  11. They all seem to think Hosmer straight up for Price or Sale straight up for Myers are better trades for “both teams.” Why didn’t you tell them about the trade value system on BTV?
  12. The Brewers also have Corbin Burnes (age 25) and Freddy Peralta (23) they could use in their rotation. Calling trading Hader tanking should at least wait until we see what he is dealt for. And you really don’t see Andujar and Garcia helping Milwaukee? I could see them plugging Andujar in at 1b, much like New York should...
  13. But most of your points rely heavily on the expiring CBA. It is entirely possible Henry simply no longer wants to spend that much every year...
  14. Except the Buckner play. Once the Mets tied the game, it started to feel like a loss anyway...
  15. Agreed. But they have at least managed two titles since then to assuage us over those poor decisions...
  16. If the union has no position, all the more reason to be cautious. If they had some ideas on their demands it might be a jumping off point. But really, the bottom line is Henry has decreed payroll is going down and the Dombrowski Days of throwing money at any roster gap might be over. As the reset is “a goal by not a mandate,” the CBA might not be the big factor you think it is. Maybe it’s as simple as John Henry is tired of dropping in excess of $200 mill annually and then watching other GMs win titles without doing so?
  17. ‘08 was another heartbreaker. Sox trailed Tampa 3 games to 1 and down 7-0 in the 7th inning of the elimination game and battled back to lose in game 7. Probably the second most exciting postseason series of the decade behind the 04 ALCS. The only reason for the lack of sting was the two titles in the previous 4 seasons....
  18. Why not ‘03?
  19. Happ makes $17mill next year. Is having the Yankees eat $5mill really enough for any team to make this a palatable deal? I bet they could do better in free agency for $12 mill. 2 years ago, Eovaldi was pretty good. He’s also 8 years younger than Happ, just as likely to bounce back, and not a rental. Both pitchers make the same salary. Why not just give up a bit more and trade for Eovaldi?
  20. Paxton Crawford cut his pitching hand on a glass when he was getting out of bed. Also - don’t forget eye poked by baby
  21. But the teams who need a CF, like the Mets, aren’t competing with Boston for Bradley; they’re competing with other teams who need a CF, like Arizona...
  22. And I bet the Yankees would have reneged on it...
  23. Merry Christmas, Nick. Made similar points many times (although obviously less effectively)...
  24. The agents might be making the argument it’s a de facto salary cap, but in nearly all MLB cities that clearly isn’t the case. The fact is, only a handful approach it, and those who do routinely exceed it and occasionally reset. But that’s limited to maybe 5 teams. The rest just spend what they can/want to, which is nowhere near that limit. Anyway this is actually all moot for this year. There still is a current CBA with penalties for spending in place, and it’s EXTREMELY unlikely a new CBA is in place in time for the penalties from the current one to be superseded. And highlighting all the issues just re-enforces that reality, and that is very likely why the Sox are not spending, although “Henry doesn’t want to” is also a district possibility. And it really doesn’t matter if you like it or if you can rationalize reasons why they’re wrong and you’re right...
  25. Henry’s frugality isn’t the fault or wish of anyone on this forum. And even if anyone did want the team to spend less, let’s face it - no one in the Sox front office is checking this forum for ideas. And that’s probably a good thing. We don’t want Wil Myers anyway...
