  1. Bear in mind, he was the highest paid closer at the time. And taking the whole contract plus giving up 2 top 100 prospects and another good prospect (who became a top 100 prospect) did impact the price for closers at the time. If the Sox did not give up so much for Kimbrel while paying fuill fare, does Wade Davis get his contract? His agent likely at some point said "Look, you can trade for a closer, but it will cost you all these prospects and the other team won't kick in a dime."
  2. I figured you of all people would want Dalbec at 3B and Devers at 1b. Even last spring, Dalbec impressed Cora enough with his fielding to last a lot longer in ST than a lot of other players....
  3. I think his glove, range, and arm play better at 3B, and I think he can handle the position better than Devers (even with the leaps and bounds Raffy made this year). Dalbec has some overall good minor lrague numbers, but at the plate, his swing and miss tendencies might become a major issue. However, if he hit at 3b, at least he is contributing defensively. As for playing 1b, certainly. The overwhelming majority of the chances for a 1b are balls thrown to him i.e. meant to be caught. Outside of catcher, this is the only position that can make this claim. That's why most questionable fielders are moved to 1b. If you look around MLB, most first baseman fall into at least one of three categories - (1) left-handed, (2) very tall or (3) moved there because they were lousy defensive players somewhere else. But if Dalbec struggles at the plate, why put him at the easiest position to field?
  4. As illinoissoxfan reminds us, Who is on first and What is on second...
  5. The one bright spot in your scenario is this is the last year of Rusney's deal. That and the fact that the Sox might lose two outfielders might actually put him on the radar for the MLB club...
  6. I'm living in a world where JDM doesn't leave. Even if he opts out, I still think the Red Sox will be his best fit and most aggressive suitor. And if the Sox lose both Betts and JDM, then maybe it is tie for a fire sale. As for Dalbec, my attitude is simple - make room for him or deal him. and I think 3B is the best position to make room, and slide Devers over to 1B. It's not like Chavis has a lock on that position...
  7. While a lot of managers do get fired for near misses, Dave Roberts has been with the Dodgers for 4 seasons and has 4 first place finishes and this is the first season he did not reach the NLCS. His playoff runs the three previous years were all ended by eventual World Series champions. (Much to the delight of Nats' fans.) If the Dodgers fire him today, he'll be managing the Mets or Cubs tomorrow...
  8. I think he might be referring to the silly notion that the Sox farm DD inherited wasn't very good because most of the under-25 crowd he dealt away have not become all stars. It's a silly mantra to keep repeating...
  9. I would in certain cases. I wouldn't make any sweeping generalizations like that, especially taking into consideration how important the bullpen is in today's game. And how important it will be for the 2020 Red Sox if they need to shorten games if any or all of Sale/Price/Eovaldi can't pitch well or can't pitch at all...
  10. I think the "Stop please" refers to your attempt to paint the idea of trading prospects into two extreme categories only, known as "always" and "never". It is an absolute necessity for a team to do it sometimes. However, Dombrowski absolutely went overboard in that regard. In fact, my biggest complaint about Cherington, which I have made multiple times, was that he never traded any prospects. Certainly it was wise to hang on to Betts and Bogaerts, but he did not need to hang on to all of them. What the Sox need is a Happy Medium. A GM who trades some of the good prospects for neeeded MLB talent but also holds on to some and gives the Sox a necessary influx of dirt cheap MLB talent as well...
  11. I don’t remember anyone saying we need to keep them both. But no one was happy the only replacement the Sox got was Colten Brewer...
  12. A Boggs hater?!?! For shame. How can you hate the man who starred in the SyFy original movie “Swamp Shark”?
  13. Won’t happen. As Bellhorn said, they’re going with launch. 30 home runs translates into more money than 30 bunt singles...
  14. I can only think of two MLB players who walked away from guaranteed deals, and both walked away from only one year. Dempster and Gil Meche. So while it has happened, it’s incredibly unlikely. It’s also possible Pedroia doesn’t think he’s done and will constantly be working towards a comeback. That seems more likely to me, although it’s not like I know him personally...
  15. Ty Buttrey stepped right into the Angels’ bullpen and became an impact pitcher. The Sox also need a SP. Don’t you think Kopech or Logan Allen could fill that role? And of all the other trades, only Manny Margot is 25. Saying “none of them were impact players, so it was ok to deal them” is actually a reason to deal Dalbec. Bear in mind, he is older than Moncada, Kopech, Guerra, Allen, and Espinoza and done as much or less in MLB than all of them. And Margot is only 9 months older than Dalbec...
  16. True but Chavis’ OBP was .322 in 382 PA. Middlebrooks never topped .280 in any season with that many plate appearances...
  17. Yes, but it’s not necessarily the best use of a player whose best asset is his defense. His arm would play well in RF, but I don’t know how well his overall defense would be out there. His biggest question mark will be his bat, and by putting him at 1b - the easiest defensive position - aren’t the Sox counting on him to be a hitter?
  18. So... the entire time the farm system was ranked last, you insisted it was fine. Niw it’s improving and you call it “extremely weak.” The real issue with the Sox farm system right now is it looks like the most MLB-ready player is a 3b, and the most likely openings for a rookie will be in 1b, 2b, CF, or RF, along with SP and RP. So unless Dalbec can handle RF, or Devers moves to 1b, are you saying the Sox should just hold on to Dalbec and leave him in Pawtucket just for the sake of having one better prospect?
  19. Maybe he is trying to impress Jenny Dell? Also cut Chavis some slack. He walks about twice as often as Middlebrooks did...
  20. He spent 8 years as a scout for the Sox, most of it as an advance scout...
  21. Dodgers are in BIG trouble now. Queue up the new Sox GM to solicit offers for Mookie...
  22. Strasburg better settle down in that case...
  23. This isn’t like unloading 4 prospects for the highest paid closer in the game and paying all the freight. It’s one blocked prospect. Look at the Kimbrel deal. Arguably only Margot was blocked, since he was almost in MLB and Bradley had 4 years left. Guerra really wasn’t, since he could have potentially arrived in MLB this year, which, before the extension, was due to be Bogaerts’ last. And Logan Allen, as a pitcher, was never blocked. Pitchers just never are.
  24. Really one of two options. 1. Move Devers to 1b. 2. Trade Dalbec, preferably for a SP or outfielder. Either work for me. Much better than the “don’t trade him because he is a prospect. Make him waste away in Pawtucket instead” mentality. It seems simple to me. Accommodate him or move him...
  25. Well, if Dalbec is traded for a full price overpaid veteran, yes. That would be dumb (depending on who it is). But if he is dealt for an equally talented minimum wage player who happens to play a position the Sox need, it’s not a bad idea at all....
