Marte would be a hige get, and I think we can offer more than most teams- either in prospects or controlled talent. We gotta try. Joe Ryan or Lodolo would be nice gets. We should be able to make two bold trades without breaking the future. We can't do just this and sit back. We'll need a major signing or two with the 2 big trades, IMO. I doubt we do it, but we can and should.
-
I'm beginning to think our best hopes for a solid #2 SP'er AND a big bat are through trades- two of them. I think we need to go all in on Ketel Marte. His ISO and SLG numbers are right up there with Schwarber and Alonso. While I hate the idea of trading away several 3-5 controlled year players to get Marte and maybe Ryan, I think we'd have enough young players and top prospects left over to keep the window open for 5 years.
-
If it's all about shorter deals, these are probably the best hopes- like em or not. Polanco has dealt with a lot of injuries, so maybe the 2025 Polanco is the real deal. Suarez is at that age where the 2025 drop off was a sign of something serious. I'm hoping JH agrees to at least one large and long deal. I think Alonso is the best fit for that, despite Casas still having hopes. (Casas can DH.) If all we do is Bregman and a trade for Ryan or Lodolo, we have not improved.
-
If we got Ryan or Lodolo and Sale, I'd be okay with that trade. I'd even give DHam over Grissom, just so Cora can't play him got 300+ PAs.

I don't see RHBs Garcia & Campbell used at near straight platoons in 2026. They both need to play everyday to work out some kinks. Ref might come back, even if we make no OF trades. If we do, it's almost a no-brainer to bring him back, more so, if we trade RHB Rafaela (doubtful.) If we trade two OF'er, I do think Brez & Cora consider Masa in LF as an option- maybe not FT, though. This scenario may become more likely, if we sign Schwarber. If we sign Alonso and Casas comes back strong, that would be another DH squeeze situation.
-
We could have spent more in years past, too. My hope is that JH sees this open window, recognize it can be 4-5 years long, and decide that now is the time he can splurge for a 4-6 year deal or two. Maybe we can cobble together 3-4 shorter term deals that get us over the hump, but that's not an easy thing to do. Suarez Merrill Kelly Polanco Is that enough?
-
One could argue we are due to hit gold on a hobbled/broken-down SP'er, soon. We have Sandoval, Crawford, Dobbins and Houck, already. Only one will be on the 60 to start the season, so how many 40 man slots do we want to reserve for these types?

I'll take back Sale, as long as the cost is not too high AND we also add Ryan, Lodolo or the like. We know better. That ain't happening.

There are plenty of pitchers "available" to us with less concerns than Sale. Sure, there best stuff does not compare in almost all cases, but Buehler had great stuff when healthy and in a groove. Kluber was a multiple Cy Young winner. Richards and Wacha and moments in the sun. Paxton, too. We have one right now in Sandoval. Crawford & Dobbins for 2026. Houck for 2027. We're booked solid. I get the fact that anyone can get hurt at anytime, but recent injury history has been a good predictor of what is to come. Even the Sale "success story" saw him miss the ends of both seasons in ATL.

A Realistic Look at the 2026 Red Sox: Part I
moonslav59 replied to moonslav59's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
There is a lot of value in thigs catchers do not captured by stats or metrics, but if you look closely, you can see how Wong got good results from the pitchers he caught. Crochet 1.74 w Wong (.597 OPSA in 31 IP) 2.74 w Narvaez (.620 in 174) Bello 3.07 w Narvaez (.790 in 29) 3.41 w Wong (.643 in 137) Giolito 2.29 w Wong (.614 in 20) 3.59 w Narvaez (..696 in 125) Buehler 4.95 w Wong (.715 in 20) 5.56 w Narvaez (.845 in 92) All of these sample sizes were very unbalanced, but Wong led in 7 of the 8 stats, among our top 4 IP starters. Whitlock: better w Narvaez in both stats Weissert: better w Wong in both Chapman: split stat leader Dobbins: split leader Bernardino: way better w Narvaez in both Wilson: better w Narvaez in both Fitts: better w Wong in both The second group is pretty even: 8 for Narvaez and 6 for Wong. (Those with 60+ IP, it was 4-4.) 8 pitchers w 60+ IP: Wong 11- Narvaez 5 leads. 11 pitchers with 45+ IP: Wong 13- Narvaez 9 -
Please, no Sale. You just know what what will happen, if he comes back. Can we please... just once...add a pitcher without so many concerns? It's like the Sox have hypnotized us into only being able to see hobbled and broken-down pitchers as options.

Sox avoid arb w Wong at $1.4M. -
Well, we added some 1B and C depth on the farm. Those were the two most empty slots on the farm.
-
I think they felt Bernardino was in decline. They held off calling him up, one time, this season. I wondered if he was hurt. His BB rate rose steadily in his 3 years. I think they like these younger arms more. Murphy and Wink were no slouches, either. Apparently, SEA liked Hoppe a bunch. They gave a guy who was ranked 127th before his injury. I think this is a sign our depth is pretty good.

The Rule 5 Draft Approaches: Who Should the Red Sox Protect?
moonslav59 replied to Nick John's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Remember the Blaze Jordan for Matz deal, and how some felt Jordan was a very promising prospect? It's interesting that the "mighty" Cardinals did not protect him from Rule 5 selection. (He may get picked.)- 116 replies

I'm fine avoiding large and long with pitchers. It's not just because of our nice success trading for top pitchers, but also because so many of them fail- often year 1 or 2. It makes sense to go large and long on a big bat, this year. We should have a 3-5 year window.

Boston Red Sox Interested In Devin Williams
moonslav59 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
If 2019-2020 winter is recent, okay. Before 2019, they extended Sale and Nate, planned on trading Betts and let Kimbrel & Kelly go without replacing in kind. One could argue the trend started then, but they did still spend a lot. Since those two extensions, in terms of adding players, it's been Story and Yoshida. That's a sharp decline. -
Boston Red Sox Interested In Devin Williams
moonslav59 replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Boston Red Sox Talk
Part of the reason they remained a top budget team was the longer term deals signed under DD. The new spending dropped off sharply after the Sale and Nate extensions/re-signings. The cheap label was accurate in this sense.
