  1. I don't get this at all. How did Buchholz, and his $13 mil contract for one year, keep the Sox from upgrading the rotation with another pitcher? If the right deal had come along during the offseason, be it FA or trade, the Sox would have made the deal. Picking up Buchholz' option did not preclude obtaining another top starting pitcher. The fact that the Sox didn't acquire another top pitcher tells me that the cost was too high. This is a situation where having Buchholz allowed the team not to have to grossly overpay for another starter. Obviously, it's not working out right now. But don't blame Buchholz for the team not having a "real" #2 or #3.
  2. I'm surprised it took them this long to DL him. Apparently, he started feeling concussion symptoms on May 10. Why the heck is he just being DL'd now?
  3. I wanted De Aza back as well. That said, I liked the Young signing. I figured he would be good insurance if Castillo failed.
  4. Does no one have a problem with Pedroia's sac bunt in the first inning? Are you kidding me? I get the idea of wanting to score first, and I get the idea of advancing a runner on 2nd with no outs. But Pedroia is very good at shooting the ball the other way. He would have very likely advanced the runner if he were swinging away, and he might have gotten a hit and opened up a big inning. Pedroia should never be sacrificing in the first inning, especially with a hot Bogaerts and Papi behind him. Bad decision.
  5. I'm glad that you and others feel some sense of vindication over Clay's poor pitching, but that doesn't change the fact that picking up Clay's option was a no brainer.
  6. Do not speak to Tito like that. Ever.

    The Cubs

BTW, if the Sox don't win it all, then the Cubs don't win it all, I hope the Guardians win it all.

    Jake Arrieta - 'Nuff said.
  9. Good Clay is in the house the tonight! Go Sox!
  10. As long as the fans vote, it will never truly be an "All Star" game. More like a "Fan Favorite" game.
  11. I am going by fWAR. Betts and Bradley are tied with 1.4 WAR, behind Trout, Eaton, and Desmond for outfielders. JBJ has been far better than Betts with the bat, but Betts has outplayed Bradley both defensively and in baserunning.
  12. To date: JBJ fWAR = 1.4 Ells fWAR = .8
  13. Fangraphs > Baseball Reference > Any other non saber baseball site
  14. It's too bad Smith has been injured. I really, really liked that trade for the Sox.
  15. Dombrowski got us two key and much needed pieces, no doubt about that. However, both Theo and Ben had a larger hand in building this team than Dombrowski had. Dombrowski is reaping the benefits sowed by his predecessors.
  16. The evolution of JBJ as a hitter, per Fangraphs. In 2014, he was just a complete mess. In 2015, JBJ tightened up his swing and learned how to hit a fastball, but was getting beat by offspeed pitches. This year so far, he has a better approach at the plate and is hitting the offspeed stuff as well. http://cdn.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/jackie-bradley-jr.png
  17. Agreed. Not only him sticking to his guns, but I want to see him go out on top and I want to see him go out on his terms. I would hate to see him try to hang on too long and get to a point where it's awkward, not only for him, but for the team.
  18. With a runner on 2nd and 0 outs, the Sox have advanced the runner 56% of the time, 4th best in the league. League average is 51%.
  19. Babe, like Jacko, is a knowledgeable poster who can engage in insightful discussions when he chooses to. @Babe, be good.
  20. I was not disagreeing with you.
  21. UZR has its flaws, but it is light years ahead of any of the traditional defensive stats. As you mentioned in another post, to get a true assessment of a player, you need to look at as many metrics as possible, as well as watch the player play. That said, if I'm going to choose one defensive stat by which to judge a player, it would be UZR. Personally, I tend to look at both UZR and DRS, and I think that gives me a pretty good idea of how a player has performed defensively.
  22. wOBA and wRC+ are easily accessible for those who are not averse to Fangraphs, though most casual fans are probably not aware of its existence. For its simplicity, OPS does a pretty good job.
  23. While it would be a nice honor for several of our guys to be voted onto the team, I would actually prefer that they take that time to rest up for the 2nd half. That said, I agree with YOTN that Papi will most assuredly make the team, and he should go since it's his last year. At this point, I could make a case for Bogaerts, Shaw, and to a lesser degree Betts and Bradley, making the team, though none of them are runaway candidates.
  24. He might be. As I said, a lot can happen between now and then, so it's too soon to know. I fully expect Panda to report in much better condition next season.
