    It is decisions like this and some of his base running decisions that had me skeptical about his ability to play 1B defensively in terms of the mental aspect. Thankfully, he has not had any Hanley moments at first so far.

    I would get rid of instant replay altogether. Absolutely no on automated balls/strikes calls.

    I'd give Mookie at least until the end of the month to get his numbers back on track before moving him out of the leadoff spot. That is, provided the offense continues to thrive as it has been. I'm a worrier. I worry about a lot. Nowhere on my list of "things to worry about" is Mookie Betts.

    Spot on point. Some players look like they're making great defensive plays because of the jumps or the dives, whereas a better defender would have made the play look fairly routine. JD Drew comes to mind here. The man got almost no love because he wasn't a dirt dog like Trot was, but fact of the matter is, he was so good defensively that he didn't have to be.

    I didn't think Hanley would be successful at 1B because I didn't think he would be able to stay focused. However, being involved in nearly every play has had a positive effect on focus, which I did think was a possibility. I'm sure you weren't talking about me, but FTR, I never have the need to be negative.

    Coming into this season, I was on the fence about Farrell and said that I would wait until the end of this season to decide. At this point, he deserves a lot of credit for the way the team is playing. I questioned some of his early moves, particularly pinch hitting Young for Shaw, but perhaps Farrell knew what he was doing because Young has looked pretty good recently. I think a manager giving his players that little vote of confidence goes a long way. Farrell, for the most part, and Tito both do a very good job of that. Some people call it being too stubbornly loyal, and maybe it is sometimes, but when the players know their manager has their backs, it goes a long way over the course of the long season.

    Trout would make any team a better team, but for the cost that it would take to acquire him in prospects and dollars, I don't think he's worth it for the Red Sox. It's not like we have a dire need for outfield or offensive help, either short term or long term. If we had the need, then Trout is definitely one of those rare players that you break the bank for. However, our weakness right now and going forward, if there is one, is starting pitching. That's where we should focus our resources.

    Taking a quick glance at their results so far, it seems that some of it is that they've played against some weak teams. Their Pythagorean W-L is about on par with their actual record. They're 2-0 in extra innings and 5-2 in one run games, so maybe just a smidge of luck. But for the most part, it looks like they're playing some pretty good ball. I hope they cool off soon.

    No, a match is not necessarily easy. If Swihart continues to struggle and not develop, then obviously his value will go down. I'm just saying that, contrary to what some people here believe, his value did not go down after last season and 8 games of this season. Other GMs realize that Swihart was put in a difficult situation last year and that he is still developing.

    I can understand people wanting to move JBJ up in the line up, but it is better to keep players in spots where they feel comfortable. I really like JBJ in the 9 hole, with the top of the order following him.

    Yeah, he was due to throw a clunker sooner or later. I guess the weather had something to do with that. Can't win 'em all, but it's still so disappointing to lose, especially after taking a 5-1 lead. Oh well, we'll get back on track today. And how do the Os keep winning?

    On the topic of baserunning, the Sox are currently 8th in MLB in baserunning runs at 2.7 runs. For comparison, the Cubs are 1st with 9.3 runs and the Padres are 2nd with 7.3 runs. Interestingly enough, take away the stolen bases, and the Sox rank 20th in baserunning with -1.2 runs.

    Even when the Sox offense regresses, and it will, they will still be one of the top offenses in the AL. Baltimore is close, and that's it.

    LOL Yaz. Good one. Speed is a great weapon, both offensively and defensively. I agree with S5's point about smart baserunning. Speed is nice, but being smart on the basepaths is just as important. Vazquez and Mookie (I believe) both took 2nd base on a pitch they saw was going to be in the dirt.

    I can't remember what thread the discussion about Swihart's trade value was in, so I'll post this tweet here. Red Sox Stats ‏@redsoxstats 2h2 hours ago NL baseball ops guy to me: "From what I've heard the White Sox are more than obsessed with Swihart. Tough to find a match there though." As I said before, I think that other teams still value Swihart a lot higher than some of the posters here do.

    To date in 2016, Vazquez is getting .33 extra strikes per game and has been worth .8 runs above average in pitch framing. That's not great for Vazquez, but we should see those numbers improve. In contrast, Swihart was getting -.29 extra strikes per game and was -.3 runs above average, in just 8 games. In 2014, Vazquez' pitch framing was worth 12.2 runs in the short time that he played. In 2015, Swihart's pitch framing cost the team 1.8 runs. And that's just pitch framing. That doesn't include gunning down base runners, blocking pitches, and the comfort/confidence intangibles.

    I was just wondering where all the love for Pedroia was. He has been great defensively so far. Maybe it's because people were not expecting much from Hanley defensively this season that he's getting all the love, but he is not the best defender on the team.

    Absolutely Hugh. The eyes can also be deceiving due to bias.

    I was scared to death of having Hanley move to 1B. I am very glad that he has proven me wrong with his defense. That said, I was not concerned about him rebounding offensively. Go Hanley!
