    I hope Buchholz goes on a nice run, just so the Sox pick up his option for next year and we can have this "no brainer" debate all over again.

    IMO, trading Hanigan would be a huge mistake. The importance of having a veteran, defensive oriented catcher is underrated. As far as trading Swihart goes, I agree with Max. Unless it's for a good, reliable starter, I'd hang onto him.

    Clay gets no love on this site. I don't think his last outing was that great, but it wasn't as bad as some make it out to be. It's not the homeruns that have hurt him, but the walks preceding the homeruns.

    The calculation is not nonsense. He was below average that year, but better than replacement level, which is what his 1.5 WAR suggests. As far as calling WAR a nonessential stat because there is more than one way to calculate it, by your reasoning, all stats should then be nonessential. Is a homerun in Petco the same as a homerun to right field in Yankee Stadium? Is a strike out by one umpire the same as a strike out by another umpire? Both methods of calculating WAR actually correlate pretty well. Because there's more than one interpretation of how to best calculate it does not make it wrong or worthless. WAR works.

    That's not the point. We all know that he hasn't been able to stay healthy for a whole season. Despite that, he was well worth $13 mil. That's the bottom line.

    I am sure that there were teams that had interest in him during the offseason. There were teams that were interested in him at the trade deadline last season. Getting injured (again) didn't help his cause, but I'd bet teams still inquired about him over the offseason.

    Absolutely. I wasn't trying to say that the Cubs are a shoe in to win it all if they made it to the playoffs. I was just arguing against a700 posting that the Cubs would be beat by the Mets or the Nats. It's more or less a crapshoot once you get to postseason.

    You don't know that. Maybe the Sox saw more value in him as a starter in our rotation than as a trade chip. It would have been rather costly to try to replace him. How is the mention of WAR making excuses for Buchholz' performance this year? The mention of WAR was solely for the purpose of defending the decision to pick up his option, nothing more. No one has claimed that he would pitch 200 innings at ace level. No one. No one has claimed that he is pitching well this season or that he is earning his $13 mil. In other words, no one is making excuses for him. As I said, there is a difference between defending his option and making excuses for the way he is pitching this season.

    You may not like it, but the way that Fangraphs computes WAR for pitchers is legit and valid. That's not to say that it's perfect, but it's certainly not trash. There is most definitely value to innings pitched and validity to FIP.

    IMO, Remy is a very good analyst. He and OB are doing a great job. I still miss Orsillo though.

    It's ironic that JBJ is being intentionally walked when there were legitimate concerns about whether he would hit enough to even stick with the team. Great to see. I'm glad that he was able to get a hit in the game with all the walking he did. It was a great game all around. Great pitching, great offense, great defense.

    I almost never watch a game live. With 2 kids, it's very difficult to have a 3 hour uninterrupted stretch. Therefore, I record the games and watch them in their entirety when I get the chance. Therefore, I usually cannot participate in the game threads during the games. Not posting in a game thread does not equal not interested in the game.

    Pedroia did this on his own. He, Farrell, and Lovullo all said as much. Farrell and Lovullo defended his decision to bunt, but more less said that they would not have called for it in that situation. They wanted him swinging away.

    LOL I'm with you on the Yankees. I would probably put the Os right in front of the Yanks. No way do I want to even see them in the World Series.

    The way I'm reading this article and Rosenthal's tweets, it sounds like he wasn't initially sure which of the two pitchers the trade was centered around. I might have missed it, but nowhere did I see that the Sox pushed for Buchholz in that trade. Maybe the Sox did offer either Buchholz or Miley, and the Mariners chose Miley for reasons that have nothing to do with a disinterest in Clay, but even with that, that's not the same as the Sox pushing Buchholz. As far as making excuses for Clay, I don't think anyone is trying to make excuses for his performance so far this year. He has not been good, plain and simple. People are just defending the decision to pick up his option, which was the right decision, regardless of how terrible Clay pitches this year.
