  1. I think Ortiz is most definitely a legitimate MVP candidate. His numbers are great, but he brings so much more to the team beyond that.
  2. I am sure they will not lose 6 games in a row, and the Jays will not likely win 6 in a row, but I'd rather not wait until the 6th or even the 5th game to clinch. Take care of business tonight.
  3. What relevant stats would you like to see? IMO, WAR captures the essence of the relevant stats.
  4. That Porcello leads Kluber in ERA- is a fair point in Porcello's favor.
  5. It would be nice to clinch and eliminate them in the process.
  6. Let's wrap up the division tonight, and get that out of the way. WIN! Go Sox!!!
  7. In the playoffs the team with HFA wins approximately 54% of the time, so it's not meaningless. It's just not as important as some make it out to be. Most of that advantage probably comes from the fact that the team with HFA was the better team to begin with. Fair enough point about having too much time off. It's Farrell's job to figure out how to balance the fine line between "rest versus rust". Most of the ideas about a team's momentum are false.
  8. I had not seen this piece. Shame on this writer for writing it. My first instinct is to say 'typical Yankee fan', but I'd like to think most Yankees fans are good enough baseball fans to give credit where credit is due. I think most of them feel that Ortiz is definitely worthy of being honored.
  9. Personally, I eagerly await "the Return of Pablo". Not this season though.
  10. There's a huge difference between the actual game taking place on the field versus assessing players afterwards in terms of using stats. When I'm watching a game, the thought of WAR never enters my mind. However, when I'm comparing and assessing players after the fact, you're doggone right I'm going to use it, along with any other meaningful stat I can get my hands on. It would be remiss not to. And to me, looking at the stats is extremely enjoyable. Also, the All-Star voting is a joke, if you're really looking for a game of 'all stars'.
  11. As I said, the Cy Young is an award for the pitcher who has had the best season. It's not for the pitcher who has helped his team the most, or the pitcher who has been the most valuable. There is a lot of room for interpretation for the latter. Not so much when you're looking for the best. If there were not people voting on it, 'they' would get it right more often, though the Cy Young award has not been terrible in that respect. Once a sabermetric component was added to the Gold Glove voting, those awards improved ten-fold.
  12. Kluber leads all pitchers in bWAR - 6.5 to Porcello's 5.1. He leads all AL pitchers in fWAR - 5.2 to Porcello's 5.1. He is 4th (behind Sale, Price, and Hamels) among AL pitchers in BP's PWARP with 5.94 to Porcello's 4.71. Kluber's Deserved Run Average, which takes into account such things as ball parks and strength of opponent, is 2.90 to Porcello's 3.46. The numbers say that Kluber has pitched better than Porcello this season. Unlike the MVP, we are looking for who pitched the 'best', not who was the most valuable.
  13. Personally, I would not spend that kind of money on a reliever. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on Encarnacion either.
  14. Who should have pinch run instead of Wright? The only other choice, really, was Pomeranz. I can agree that he was a better choice than Wright, but Farrell didn't have any other options besides a starting pitcher.
  15. The playoff party bus is gassed up and on its way! Next stop -Division Champs!
  16. I was really hoping that Detroit would keep the Os out of the playoffs, but I don't see that happening now.
  17. There were many calling for him to be put in the pen since spring training. I was not one of the many. He seems to have found his niche though.
  18. The Rays announcers brought this up several times. How bored the Rays fans must have been not seeing a ball put in play for so long. LOL
  19. Of course it's possible to accomplish both. That wasn't really my point. My point is that HFA is not the advantage in baseball that it is in other sports. There have been some posts stating or suggesting that the Sox should play for HFA once they lock up the division. My contention is that playing for HFA should not come at the expense of getting some players their much needed rest. In other words, if we had to choose one or the other, I'm choosing resting the players.
  20. Forgot about Hernandez, to be honest. I have no problem considering him over Pablo. Pablo is not going to be handed the job unless it becomes a dire situation. He screwed up during the offseason. A lot of fans are still angry at him. I get that. But I disagree that he shouldn't even be in the conversation.
  21. Good to see you. You should stick around. Papi asked the Rays not to honor him today in a pre-game ceremony out of respect for Jose Fernandez. Class act on and off the field.
  22. Rotation is being set for Porcello to pitch Game 1 and Price to pitch Game 2.
