  1. Just roughly a month or so ago, I was sure the Jays would win the division and that we'd be fighting for one of the wildcard spots. Now the Jays are fighting for their playoff lives. How quickly things can change in this game.
  2. VA mojo! Woohoo! Back on the winning track!
  3. No, the numbers favor the better regular season team.
  4. Well, I think that's where the interpretation and the subjectivity of 'valuable' comes into play. I respectively disagree.
  5. As much as people really do not want Pablo anywhere on the big league roster, it would be in the team's best interest if he can rebound to close to his 2014 numbers. If nothing else, we need someone who can hold down the fort until Moncada is ready.
  6. I agree, it is very hard to understand all the numbers behind it. However, it has an even stronger correlation with future ERA than xFIP does. I think the discrepancy in the numbers says more about the flaws in ERA than it says about any problem with DRA.
  7. I'm guessing that Farrell considered the last game against the Yankees pretty much meaningless. Even though the Yankees were technically still alive, that game really didn't have any playoff implications. Farrell needs to maintain the integrity of this series against the Jays for the sake of the other teams trying to catch them. Also, the weather this weekend will be a factor. Thursday was a good day to rest several players.
  8. Betts has had the better season, but once again, I don't think 'most valuable' necessarily equates to best numbers. Both Papi and Pedroia are valuable in ways that Mookie is not, not to knock Mookie in any way.
  9. I've mentioned Pedroia's name a couple of times. I agree that he is a legitimate MVP candidate too.
  10. Still my hero.
  11. Yes, there is a such thing as HFA, but it is not as important in baseball as it is in other sports. Home teams win about 54% of playoff series, but most of that advantage is due to selection bias. The home field teams win slightly more because they are the better teams, which is why they had HFA to begin with. It is more important to make sure the players are healthy and well rested.
  12. Agreed on relievers.
  13. I'm not sure there is a 'formula' for calculating DRA. There are too many adjustments taken into account. But strikeouts for pitchers are good. Very good. This article contains the 'simple' explanation of DRA. Within the article there is a link to the 'in depth' explanation of it, if you're so inclined. LOL http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26195
  14. HFA is not all it's cracked up to be.
  15. And saves. And blown saves.
  16. Woohoo! Playoff party bus is rolling! Let's go!
  17. This is not the way any of us would have scripted the Sox clinching the division, but in the end, it really doesn't matter. Farrell did a great job getting the team pumped up to enjoy the celebration the way that they should have. As he said, don't let one inning ruin or underscore what they have accomplished all season. The team deserved their celebration. They earned it. And Woohoo!!!
  18. Red Sox @ Yankees Last round up for 2016 7pm @ Boogie Down Owens 0-1 / 7.99 The lefty replaces Drew Pomeranz, who has been dealing with forearm soreness. Owens was added to the roster in September as an insurance policy. This is his first start for Boston since Aug. 21. In 24 Triple-A starts, Owens was 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA. CC 8-12 / 4.02 Sabathia makes his final start of the season. He pitched a gem last time out, against the Blue Jays, yielding just four hits in seven innings, but was left with his fourth straight no-decision. Division clinched, time to eliminate the stinkin' Yankees. Win!!!
  19. Probably not. And as you and I have discussed before, that is one of the biggest problems with trying to prove that 'clutch' exists in the postseason.
  20. I was looking at Game Scores the other day. Kluber leads Porcello in Average Game Score, 60.4 to 59. My new pitching stat of interest is Deserved Run Average, which seems to be very comprehensive in determining how many runs a pitcher should be 'blamed' for.
  21. Ks for pitchers are important. Ks for hitters are an entirely different thing. sk explained it pretty well. Either way, I agree, it's a very close race. I'd be thrilled if Porcello won it. I think he probably will.
  22. Sometimes there is a disparity. In this particular case, all 3 major versions of WAR (or WARP) favor Kluber, which IMO, makes the case for Kluber stronger.
  23. I beg your pardon.
  24. It's not only a small sample, but it's a small sample spread out over 6 seasons. That makes the postseason numbers even less meaningful.
  25. Ok, I found that way too funny.
