  1. Two players that I would never count out are Papi and Pedroia.
  2. I still think there is a difference between being the best and being the most valuable.
  3. I respectfully disagree. It's the sign of a good team. Every team is going to lose some tough games. Every team is going to have streaks. The run differential tells you pretty much what you need to know about the talent of the team.
  4. That's a good question, and that is something that Farrell is going to have to address. I read this morning that Kimbrel was working through some kind of mechanical adjustment. Not the best of times to be doing that, but whatever. Kimbrel doesn't seem to have lost any confidence in his ability. His response to last night's outing was something along the lines of, a walk due to mechanical adjustments, cross up on signs, sac fly, not a bad outing. It's good that he's not down on himself. OTOH, as you mentioned, is he taking any ownership of his poor outings? In short, I don't know the answer to your question. This is why the managers get paid the big bucks.
  5. It looks like the ALDS rotations are somewhat set. Brian MacPherson Retweeted Jordan Bastian Game 1: Bauer-Porcello Game 2: Kluber-Price Game 3: Tomlin-Rodriguez, probably Game 4: Bauer-Buchholz, probably Game 5: Kluber-Porcello
  6. Ha. I'm driving the playoff party bus with Slasher, Gronk, Papi, and Pedroia navigating. We're not stopping until Papi is wearing one more Championship ring. All aboard!
  7. 1. The 2013 Red Sox lost 3 of their last 5 games. 2. How a team finishes the season has no correlation to their postseason success. In other words, there is little truth to the notion of 'momentum' or lack thereof carrying into the playoffs. 3. I've said it a hundred times and I'll say it again. Winning by scores like 13-1 and losing by one or two runs is a sign of a good team.
  8. I was going to post something about this in my response to a700, but I figured it would be falling on deaf ears. In short, with Cleveland and the Red Sox having virtually the same record, HFA will mean almost nothing.
  9. I can almost guarantee you that in a playoff game, Farrell will have his Plan B warming up in the pen, just in case. Last night's game, despite what some think, did not have the urgency to it that required having another reliever ready in case Kimbrel faltered. When asked about the possibility of flipping Kimbrel and Koji after last night's game, Farrell responded 'not yet'. To me, it sounds like Kimbrel will be on a very short leash in the ALDS. I share your concerns about Kimbrel, though I think you're being a bit harsh on him. Thankfully, we do have Koji, who has been very good since returning from the DL and who has also been money in the postseason.
  10. Yup. What was the boy thinking?
  11. I believe you are the one arguing in a circle. You are trying to make HFA in and of itself more important than it is. It's just not.
  12. Now there is something to doing the lefty right thing. A manager is better off breaking up his lefties to avoid easy matchups for opposing managers than he is trying to micromanage every single spot in the lineup.
  13. It has been jokingly suggested that a manager could pull his lineup out of a hat everyday and win as many games over the season as he would by setting his lineup. There is more truth to that notion than most people believe.
  14. I'm sure that they are, and they would be overanalyzing lineups too. For every positive effect you have for moving a player up or down, their is a nearly equal countereffect elsewhere. In the end, it just doesn't matter much.
  15. No, no, no.
  16. I don't have anything against any of the stats that you like to use. IMO, they are all good stats. However, if you're looking for the pitcher who had the best season, you have to try, as best as possible, to eliminate factors that are out of the pitchers control. Yes, it gets complicated, but that's why we have the stat geeks. If you want a good measurement of what actually happened on the field, the consensus is that bWAR does a better job of that than fWAR. Kluber leads Porcello by a good margin there. Personally, my preference in WAR is fWAR. That said, it really is pretty close.
  17. Let's get it done boys! WIN!
  18. I'm hoping that the reality of losing his job this year and sitting out the entire season due to injury will be a great motivator to Pablo. As you said, I wouldn't count on him to be the starting 3B but I wouldn't count him out either.
  19. I have no problem with anyone who says Betts is the MVP. He's been awesome and certainly deserving. I just think that both Papi and Pedroia are legitimate candidates as well.
  20. You are way overanalyzing line ups.
  21. Looking at the season that Turner had, I don't think he's going to be had for a 2 year deal. Outside of that, I'd be good with that if Dombrowski could pull it off.
  22. The only factor that has a strong correlation with post season success is regular season success.
  23. I can live with that.
  24. It is an accurate evaluation of what happened this season in terms of how well the pitcher pitched.
