    You had me up until "concentrate and spend the resources on strengthening the bullpen." Actually, I can agree with that too, up to a point, but as I've said many times before, I don't like spending big on the bullpen. That's not to say that the bullpen is not important, I just don't want to spend big on it. I think the concentration of resources should be on starting pitching.

    No surprise about the QO, and also no surprise that other teams are interested in ERod. The Sox have reportedly made a multi-year offer to ERod, though details are not known.

    I guess we'll see. My thought is that if Schwarber is signed, a trade would be in the works. That said, with a team that should be focusing on improving defense, I'm having a hard time seeing a fit either way. Not that I wouldn't love having Schwarber back.

    I have stated that I think Cash deserves MOY, but it really is a slight that Cora is not one of the 3 finalists. IMO, he should be there instead of Dusty Baker. He should be ahead of Servais also.

    With all the uncertainty surrounding the new CBA, this is really no surprise. I know some were hoping to free up that money, but I'm really happy that JD will be remaining with the team. What I find interesting is that Bloom still sees Schwarber as a good fit.

    His expected ERA was 4.01. Not great, but also not as terrible as the actual 5.83 ERA. The deal might not be that appealing, but this is the kind of deal you can make to take a chance on somebody. If he ends up being serviceable, it's a pretty good deal. If he's a bust, it's not too difficult to eat a one year contract.

    Those of you who are pro robot umps seem to be very intolerant of the opinions of the other side. That's my take.

    Sliding into a base correctly is a baseball skill. That includes being able to stay on the bag as you complete your slide.

    It's okay to cost a team some possible runs by getting other calls wrong?

    What's the current rule? If the player comes of the bag with the tag still on he's out. If high-resolution ultra slow mo can catch that, why shouldn't it be used? I'm just having a problem with the argument that we should used technology to get balls and strikes calls 100% right because the technology is available, yet we don't want to use technology to get the other calls right.

    I wouldn't have a problem with him accepting it. It's a little more than I'd like to pay, but it's only for one year. He's a solid starter who pitched much better than his inflated ERA suggests that he pitched.

    I think someone will offer 3 years. Probably even four.

    The plan is to prioritize sustainability over 'win now' mode. That has been the plan pretty much every year that Henry has been with the Sox, except for when he took a lack of patience detour and hired Dombrowski.

    I think Henry wants to win as badly as anyone else does. He has shown since he's been with the Red Sox that he's willing to spend. No one should accuse him of being tight with his money. I do tend to agree with Notin that he is not very patient. Fortunately, the Sox made the playoffs this year, so hopefully that will give Henry enough patience to let Bloom stay the course.

    Scherzer is one of the few that have defied the odds and maintained great value over a long term contract. That said, he's 37 years old. Unless he's coming to the Red Sox on a one (preferably) or two year deal, I would not take the risk.

    I think we entered a slippery slope as soon as instant replay was instated. Instant replay could be used for every type of call. I am, in no way, in support of that, but I don't see what makes getting one type of call right more important than getting another type of call right.

    It might not be as serious an issue, but a wrong call on a slide can impact the outcome of the game just as much as an incorrect ball or strike call. The technology is available to correct missed calls on slides, just as it's available to correct missed calls behind the plate. If you're going to support the technology in one case, why not support it in all cases?

    I would prefer the limited number of challenges over having balls and strikes called electronically. The bottom line is that the umpires are not held accountable enough. They can be among the worst at calling games, yet they remain 'highly ranked' due to seniority. The system is broken. However, I don't think robot umps is the answer. There are better umpires available.

    Simple solution. Get rid of instant replay.

    But don't we want to get every call right? That's what I'm hearing from you robo ump advocates.

    Is it okay to get these calls wrong? If we're not tolerant of any human error from the umpires, then replay should be allowed for any type of call, no matter how insignificant it may seem. Not that I'm advocating for that.
