  1. Since the All Star break, the Yankees are 25th in runs scored. Who would have thunk it?
  2. Well then, he should definitely come around more!
  3. Which is exactly why it's not a good idea to try to win now at any cost.
  4. LOL That's better!
  5. Just to clarify, while there is a way to optimize a line up, and putting your best hitter in the 3rd slot is not it, I am one who has said over and over that batting order does not make that much of a difference. All of the hand wringing over who bats where is mostly for naught.
  6. You should come around more often and post with us.
  7. LOL You are awesome!
  8. IMO, you do a great job. No need to apologize for the trolls.
  9. Nice! For me, whatever offense our catchers provide is gravy. Some more love for our catchers: According to Stat Corner, our catchers rank 7th (Vaz) and 11th (Leon) out of all catchers in pitch framing, with +6.4 and +3.2 runs above average, respectively.
  10. I am guessing if you look at the line ups of any teams, you will find some glaring 'mistakes', even from the managers that people consider the best. On a side note, I just watched a movie that gave the 'medical' definitions of idiot, imbecile, and moron. Idiot (IQ of 0 - 25) is the lowest you can go. LOL
  11. 458 runs allowed, second best in the league behind Cleveland's 438, but we've also played 3 more games than they have. We have the 4th best run differential at +85. Not too shabby.
  12. For years, all we've heard is pitching, pitching, and pitching! Well, we have that. Of course it would be nice to have top pitching and and a top offense, but we have top pitching and a mediocre offense, which I still think should be better than it has been. That's better than having a top offense and mediocre pitching, no?
  13. Walk towards the light Max.
  14. Of course we're in 'win now' mode. We are already good enough to win this year. Resetting the tax allows Dombrowski to reload for the remaining years of the window. But you already know that.
  15. Without the guarantee of a championship, I don't think you take the chance at the expense of the long term. I think this team could have been competitive for the short term without sacrificing the long term.
  16. Well, I'm not a believer in the 'pressure track record', but I was hardly all in for Price. I had nothing against him as a pitcher, but that contract... Just say no to big contracts! And that includes one for Mookie, whom I love dearly.
  17. Yeah, I got that you were talking in terms of spending larger. I just wanted to point out that Henry had indeed gone nutty. LOL
  18. Evan Drellich had another nice article about the 'window' this morning. The following quote sums it up nicely: The simple of act of trading future assets for the present is an endorsement of windows, in a basic way.
  19. We don't have the powerhouse offense that we are accustomed to, but our pitching is supposed to be our strength, which it has been. IMO, our offense is good enough to get the job done.
  20. I agree with you about the mental mistakes and the sometimes lack of fundamentals. It is fair to question what is going on with the manager and coaches there. As far as having a slow hook to move Moreland out of the clean up spot, line up decisions should not be made based on in season performance. Not that Moreland in the 4 spot was the best decision in the first place, but in terms of performance for the remainder of the season, valid rest of season projections trump season to date performance. In other words, statistically speaking, don't move someone out of a spot because they are slumping. OTOH, there might be valid non-statistical reasons for moving someone out of a slot, like taking some pressure off of the player.
  21. I agree with all of this. We are fortunate to have 2 catchers who are strong defensively.
  22. I think I remember seeing the numbers you produced back then. I am pretty sure that I also read an article on how it improved the relievers coming into the game after Wake. It makes sense that a knuckleball would disrupt a hitter's timing, but from what I've read recently (and very briefly), there doesn't seem to be any significant hangover.
  23. sk, that post was not directed at you, or anyone in particular. You are always reasonable in your posts. I do not cite going over the tax as a reason not to sign Betts. I cite the risks of long term deals as the reason for not signing Betts. I am 100% sure the team will go over the tax limit next year, which is why they worked so hard to stay under it this year. They are willing to spend. They have spent a lot during their tenure, including eating millions of dollars in bad contracts. This ownership is not 'cheap'. The bottom line, however, is that it is a business. While they are not cheap, they are also not reckless.
  24. Good post. Henry did go nutty after 3 last place finishes. He fired Ben, denounced sabermetrics, and threw the organization's previous philosophy out the window. He pretty much did a 180.
  25. I do not disagree with any of that. There is a difference between good aggressiveness and bad aggressiveness, and there's a difference between good aggressiveness and stupidity or mental lapses. That said, I don't know how many times players and Butterfield have been called out for taking a decent chance (good aggressiveness) when the runner is out. And yet, when a run scores due to aggressive baserunning, no credit is given. Yes, we need to cut down on the blunders. But for all of the angst over our baserunning, we are still in the positive in both UBR and wSB.
