Perhaps some of us think it's possible to have our cake and eat it too. Maybe it's possible to have a good team now and still have a good team post cliff.

To an extent. IMO, if the Sox win a World Series, then the trade is worth it, even if Espinoza goes on to be a perennial Cy Young winner. Winning the World Series is the ultimate goal. If Pom helps lead us to the postseason (which he is doing), but we fall short of a championship, then whether is was worth it or not becomes a little more shady. Might we have subsequently won a championship with Espinoza if he wasn't traded? Might we have eventually traded him for another player and subsequently won a championship? There's no way of knowing for sure, but I can't go as far as saying that the trade was worth it just because we make it to the postseason. And again, I thought the trade was necessary, but so far, we've fallen short of the goal.

The Sox have scored 744 runs to date, which puts them 10 in MLB. This puts them on pace to score 787.8 runs this season with 9 games remaining. This would have still ranked as the best offense in the league last year. Moon, your point about the rest of the league's offense improving, making our drop off in run scoring seem much worse is a good point.

I agree that Holt's versatility is overrated in the sense that he is not very good at fielding any of the positions. However, I think the fact that he can play all of the positions is valuable. That said, you are probably right when it comes to a short series. -
No thanks. Then again, I don't think Stanton is as good as some people think he is. He's very good, no doubt. But I still think some are overly star struck by his homerun hitting this year.

If a team is trying to do a salary dump on a player like Stanton, they can put the player on waivers. If another team makes a claim for the player, the owning team has 3 options: 1. They can revoke the waivers and keep the player. Teams often do this with players just to gauge interest. 2. They have a certain period of time to work out a trade with the claiming team. 3. They can 'give' the player to the claiming team outright, along with all of the remaining salary. The claiming team does not have the option of backing out if the owning team chooses this option. Therefore, the claiming team could be on the hook for any player that they claim. This is to avoid having teams put claims on every player just to block other teams. This is why no one put in a claim for Manny or for Stanton. No team wanted to get stuck with that salary.

I voted that we win the World Series, because we really have as good a chance as any other team. The playoffs are mostly a crapshoot. That said, IMO Cleveland is the strongest team of all the post season bound teams. Plus they have Tito. Randomness and crapshoots aside, I think it's their World Series to lose.

There were some people who said this was a .500 team as late as the All Star break. So, IMO, you ARE special.

I wouldn't try to offload him. That would just create another hole that would need to be filled. IMO, Dombrowski should already be looking to acquire a mid rotation pitcher.

I am on board with the Davis and Marrero choice. But Marrero only if Farrell is going to pull Devers for a defensive replacement. If Farrell is not going willing to do that, then I'd go with everyone's favorite whipping boy Holt. Holt allows Farrell the most versatility out of that group. -
I am probably the biggest Porcello supporter here, and even I don't have confidence in him starting a playoff game right now. He has been so inconsistent. He could could be lights out like he was in his last outing, or he could be total crap. That said, he did settle down nicely after the first inning.

Actually, after the first 20 games, his hitting all around dropped way off. His OBP for the next 20 games or so was below .300. He has picked it up a little in the past few games.

The Guardians have the best run differential, by a fairly good margin (48 runs). They are the team to beat, not that it guarantees them anything once the playoffs start.

The pen has been very good all year, but they could use the rest too. I know we have other guys in the pen who can pitch 'mop up', but as you said, the Os can score a lot quickly. I'm okay with the decision to leave him in.

Personally, I really think there were some good "human element" reasons to leave him out there. Sale does not seem like the type of guy who needs it, but going 8 strong innings after some so-so to rough outings has to feel good. Let him sit on that kind of an outing as we near the playoffs.

I was okay with Farrell leaving Sale in the game, but I can definitely see that argument for pulling him after 5 or 6 innings.

The chances are that we will win the division. However, anything can and does happen in baseball. A 3 game swing in one week is not unheard of, and the fact that we have some fairly easy competition coming up does not matter. The Dodgers are in danger of being swept by the Phillies. The point is, you can't take anything for granted, especially with only 10 games left to go. I agree with you way more often than not, but this is a time where I strongly disagree. IMO, it is pretty close to a slam dunk choice.

That's the bottom line. A 'rested' Sale won't do us any good if we get eliminated in the wild card game. If Sale falters in Game 1 of the ALDS due to lack of rest, at least we have the rest of the series to overcome that.
