  1. Cobb was in the midst of an unraveling. He let that balk call, which he had not been called for this season, get to him.
  2. LOL Maybe that will be the key to having the 'good' Porcello for the remainder of the season? To state the obvious, Porcello is going to be a lot more successful if that sinker is sinking. An additional 5" of drop is pretty significant.
  3. There is a very fine line between boneheaded and aggressive. As you mentioned, three people can watch the exact same play and come up with 3 different conclusions. I think the general tendency is to think that a play is boneheaded if it doesn't work, and aggressive if it does work. It's the same thing with managerial decisions. If it doesn't work, it was a stupid decision. If it works, it was a good decision. It's human nature to judge things in hindsight. It would be great if we could all give our opinions before the play happened and the outcome is known, but obviously, that's not possible.
  4. The team has played 55 extra innings, if I recall correctly. That is the equivalent of 6 extra games, which is a lot of extra physical and mental wear and tear. Our bullpen has been a strength in all of those extra inning affairs. Our offense is still largely frustrating, but they are hitting enough to get it done. It should be a really fun ride the last two weeks of the season.
  5. The latest I heard was that Nunez was making good progress and that he could return on this road trip. Did you read something different this morning?
  6. Salty made a good point on the telecast last night, about how a 3 game lead probably doesn't seem like a lot to the Sox, but it probably does seem like a lot to the Yankees. Think about it this way. If we were 3 games behind the Yankees at this point, would you feel very confident about being able to win the division? I think most posters here would be more concerned with not falling out of the wildcard race, if that were the case. The division is not wrapped up by any means, but we are in the driver's seat. I would much rather be in our position than in the Yankees' position.
  7. Yes they figured something out - not to throw his changeup.
  8. Awesome. Aggressive baserunning at its finest. Had he been caught, it would have been deemed the boneheaded play of the season.
  9. It was nice to see Porcello pitch so well, giving most of the pen some rest in the process. Here's some interesting tidbits on Porcello from my favorite tweeter: Red Sox Stats‏ @redsoxstats 7h7 hours ago Opponents have hit .320 with 6 homers and a .600 slugging off Porcello changeups this year.... he's dumped the pitch, 0 in his last 2 starts Porcello's sinker had about 5" more drop tonight than in his last start, about 3" more than his average for this season.
  10. Yes! I mentioned in a previous post that I thought he did a good job behind the plate. Not only 7 innings caught, but he caught 6 different relievers, which is no small task.
  11. The Yankees look good and really should be leading the division based on run differential, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.
  12. I think I could be 'okay' with any of Dombrowski's deal taken in a vacuum. That's not to say that I agree with all of them, like the trade for Kimbrel, but I could be okay with that deal in and of itself. As you said, it's the magnitude of the prospects traded away, thereby greatly depleting our farm system. It is a philosophical preference. I'm all about the farm system and building winners now while not sacrificing the long term. Others want to stack the current team regardless of what impact it might have on the future.
  13. Theo's philosophy has always been to make the farm system a priority. IMO, if you're focusing on that and you have a strong farm, there is no cliff. To date, I have not seen building the farm system as a top priority for Dombrowski, which is why I see an impending cliff. I have acknowledged that a lot can happen in the next 3 years. Also, Henry seems to be reeling Dombrowski in a bit in terms of depleting the farm any further. By the time 2020 arrives, the cliff may very well not be there.
  14. I don't think you're reading it right. The biggest change in win expectancy that I see in this game is +35% when Cleveland tied the game in the bottom of the 8th with another runner advancing to 3rd.
  15. This is good stuff, isn't it? This goes along with the changes in win expectancy and run expectancy that I have talked about before. This is the way that you need to go when you are trying to figure out how many games we have lost due to boneheadedness.
  16. I do not disagree with that at all. In fact, I stated in my previous that every play and pitch affects the outcome of the game, which is exactly what you're saying. Yes, a play can absolutely decrease the chances of winning the game. I didn't say it couldn't. What I said was that a game can never be won or lost on a single play. When someone says that a certain play 'cost us that game', I disagree. It may have contributed to the loss, it might not have. But my point is that it did not single handedly cost us a game.
  17. Vazquez batting in the 2 hole! Go Sox! Win this game!
  18. Manfred has sent a message to the Yankees.
  19. "Appears" being the key word. I understand the feeling. I feel the same way when I see a play like, believe me. However, two big points that keep this from being true: 1. There are 27 outs in a game and who know how many plays and pitches. Every one of them affects the outcome of the game. Every single one of them. The outcome of the game is never determined by one play alone. 2. There is absolutely no way of knowing what would have happened if the 'key play' had gone differently. The outcome might have been exactly the same, or it might not have been.
  20. Yes. Last night Farrell said something about the shoulders, but this morning I'm reading that Hanley has had an MRI on his left biceps, and it appears that he will be out for a while. The plan is to use Pedroia primarily as the DH to rest his knee, and get Nunez back at 2B. Thanks for the link Harmony.
  21. IMO, both teams showed a lot of heart in this game.
  22. A professional baseball player should certainly know the basics of how to run the bases.
  23. The pen, on the whole, did a very good job. Kelly's 3 innings were huge.
