  1. He has also reportedly said that he has no desire to sign an extension early. Translation: He is out for the biggest contract he can get (all about the money). I guess that's his right, but it's always disheartening to me.
  2. Not that I will like it any better if he decimated it again.
  3. Yes, but not 'often'. When Dombrowski builds his own strong farm system for the Sox, he will then have the right to do with it whatever he chooses.
  4. If Mookie will sign a 6 year deal, I'm in.
  5. Not if you have a strong farm system.
  6. Tampa's dollar per win is much lower because they don't spend as much in free agency. That said, Fangraphs value is what teams, on the whole, paid for a marginal win through free agency.
  7. When you add up the price of the free agents signed that year and how many games their perspective teams won, you can figure out how much each win cost a team through free agency.
  8. It depends on how much they sign our studs for. Again, the goal is to have that revolving door of prospects to take the place of at least some of the guys that get too expensive to keep. I'm not signing Betts to a 10 year contract. As much as it will hurt to lose him, let him walk, take the draft pick, and bring in the next stud to take his place. Let another team enjoy Betts for a few years then deal with the albatross contract in the latter years.
  9. Bury the Yankees even deeper. WIN!!!
  10. I can't believe that Henry is willing to incur those higher penalties year after year after year. I'm surprised he was willing to go over the highest limit this year, but I guess he feels this is the year. Eventually, however, something has to give.
  11. To me, it's not about who's saving money or who's pocketing it. If Henry were a cheapskate, it might be a different story, but he has always shown his commitment to winning in terms of spending. It's about the underlying philosophy, or whatever you want to call it. I don't like being thought of as the team that 'buys' its way to championships and spends money recklessly just because Henry can afford to do so. It's also bad business to have to eat millions of dollar in contracts when the player inevitably no longer performs to the contract.
  12. I agree. And Bradley, knowing he was caught in a run down, made a very wise commitment and an excellent slide.
  13. Nothing is guaranteed, but the stronger the farm system, the better the chances of producing your future Killer Bs.
  14. Yes, they did, a move clearly intended to improve the future of the team. While I am all about not sacrificing the future when putting together a team, I am 100% against weakening the current playoff bound team to improve the future outlook. I was against DFAing Hanley and the idea of trading JBJ for prospects because of this.
  15. The goal is to win as many games as possible, within reason. No, I currently do not trust Pom enough to start him in a crucial series like this one against the Yankees. But I am comfortable enough with our current lead to allow Pom another start or two to see if there's any chance of him returning to previous form. If we were tied with the Yankees, I might agree that we don't have time for second chances. But being where we are, I think we afford to be a little more patient with him.
  16. As I have posted before, I really don't care to rehash the entire argument again. I just don't agree that because we are a big market team, we should get away from what I believe are the fundamentals of building a long term successful franchise, which begins with the farm system. I don't think I will ever be okay with shelling out large contract after large contract in lieu of having a strong farm and cost-controlled players, simply because we can afford to do so. To that end, let me finish with once again praising Dombrowski for the work that he's done for our present team. He deserves much credit.
  17. LOL I am no match for sk.
  18. It's not about whether the prospects are currently missed. Some of those prospects might be missed when the likes of Betts, etc. walk and we have no one to replace them. The goal is to have a revolving door of cost controlled players to keep the payroll down so that we don't have to have a crazy high payroll. Paying to keep all of our youngsters is a recipe for disaster. Dombrowski did a great job of keeping Beni and Devers.
  19. It depends on the player and the position. As you know, I'm not paying giving large contracts to relievers. It also depends on age and length of contract. For Vaz, I was very happy with his extension. I think it's a great deal for the Sox without the benefit of hindsight. I probably would be okay with an AAV of $6 or $7 mil for him for no more than 3 years.
  20. There were many of us who were expecting regression from Pom, even if he stayed healthy, and positive regression from Price and Porcello. Sale is Sale. Therefore, the expectations were for ERod and Pom to be the #4 and 5 starters, in no particular order. As far as the team being on a run for all time record books, the FO and Cora cannot make decisions based on trying to chase the record books. With the lead that we have over the Yankees, we can most certainly afford to give Pom another look. No, we cannot carry a negative producer in the rotation indefinitely, but I don't think anyone is saying that.
  21. The point being that you can't say that a play or decision was a good play or a bad play based on the end result.
  22. Yes, I did read that. As far as I recall, however, I didn't hear a single criticism in the game thread about Jackie making a boneheaded play. It's very similar to the difference in perception between Pom's start and Johnson's start.
  23. We will have to disagree on that sk. Of course Henry could keep the team together if he's willing to shell out the money for it and have an insanely high payroll. That would more or less be the consequence of our currently mortgaged future. It's not the way to put together a team.
