  1. I don't have a good answer on how to make room for Anthony, but personally, I am against trading any of Duran, Rafaela, or Abreu. I understand it may be necessary for a couple of reasons, but I'm against it. What are our options if one of the remaining outfielders has a significant injury?
  2. I don't know if the Sox will make a big run at the end of the year, but 1-run games randomness is a big factor.
  3. I remember how much criticism Francona used to get from Red Sox fans when he managed the Red Sox. I just think that criticizing your team's manager is a rite of passage of being a baseball fan.
  4. I am pulling for Story probably harder than I'm pulling for any other player on the Red Sox this season. It's still a very lonely ride on his bandwagon. Very small sample, but the month of June has been good. Fingers crossed that it continues.
  5. Varitek would not call for something that is out of the pitcher's ability or comfort level. He was also very good at coaxing a pitcher through 5 or 6 innings when it looked like the pitcher had nothing and would be out of the game by the 3rd inning.
  6. I hope it would be a collaborative effort among coaches and not a situation in which they are butting heads. Isn't that Varitek's official role, though? Game Planning Coordinator.
  7. Perhaps the stressing of "pull air" is why the K's are piling up so high.
  8. There are a few things in this post that I disagree with, but it boils down to the playoffs being largely a crapshoot. Teams with consistently larger payrolls will make the playoffs more consistently, but once there, teams with large payrolls and superstar names have just about the same chance of winning in the playoffs as teams like the Tigers. Don't even get me started on clutch performers.
  9. Breslow is the one who hired Bailey, but I think all three guys, Breslow, Bailey, and Cora were/are on the same page. They are all analytics guys, so I would think they have similar philosophies. At any rate, I just don't share the critical opinions that you have about Cora. I do think there is something amiss with the communication going on in the clubhouse this year, but as far as pitching changes and line ups are concerned, I'm fine with Cora's decisions, for the most part.
  10. 100%. I'll admit, I like to hear what the guys have to say sometimes, but it should not be done when the player is supposed to be actively entrenched in the game.
  11. Definitely, starting pitching has to get better. It would be nice not to be in a hole after the first inning. That said, I am in total shock that our offense has scored so many runs in the last 4 games. Shocked!
  12. When he was playing, Varitek was the master at being able to change the game plan during the game, even in the first or second innings. I would imagine that he would still be doing this for his pitchers and catchers, even though he's not actually catching.
  13. If it is true, it sounds like it's time for Lawson to go. I am way more on board with Fatse's philosophy.
  14. I didn't think there was any apparent injury. That said, he hasn't been right at the plate for a while, so maybe he has something nagging that's been going on.
  15. Did I miss the Wilyer Abreu injury or is this an injury of the phantom type?
  16. Our season is saved.
  17. Perhaps he and Story are both breaking out of their slumps?
  18. I think you guys are being too hard on Wong. His offense has not been there, but perhaps that has to do with having so few at bats and inconsistent playing time? His expected stats are significantly better than his actual stats. Defensively, Wong ranks 15th out of ALL catchers in Catching Defense Added Runs with +1.2, despite having fewer opportunities than many other catchers. Narvaez ranks 3rd with +6.1. I have no problem with Wong as our backup catcher.
  19. This just goes to show you that you don't need a bunch of superstars and big contract players to have a great team.
  20. I know the feeling all too well. Fortunately, I don't have to do it weekly, but meetings/training are pretty much a waste of my time.
  21. None of us knows exactly what goes on in the dugout, nor how much influence the other coaches have. I'm inclined to think that Cora leans pretty heavily on both Bailey and Varitek, though admittedly, I have zero proof of that.
  22. As I mentioned before, the Braves are the Red Sox of the National League. They keep finding ways to lose games. They have 19 one-run losses. They are the only team with more one-run losses than the Red Sox.
  23. Right now, when we can't even win 3 games in a row, it seems like an impossible task. That said, 56-42 is not an outrageous mark to reach. Something has to give, though.
