  1. Just stay healthy is right. You might think he'd be snake bit after being injured the past 3 seasons, but Story still runs hard and plays hard, which I love to see. I'm a big fan.
  2. I agree that the road trip right after the break is likely going to determine what direction the team goes at the deadline. I didn't realize that the upcoming series against the Rays is a 4-game series. It will be a challenge to win 3 out of 4. How we play in that series could also set the tone for what happens after the break. I like this team. I think they have the talent to get into the playoffs. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
  3. I am always up for some good Trevor Story news. For about 60% of the season, Story has been a really, really good player. He's been carrying a lot of the load recently, defensively too.
  4. I think that most of us acknowledged that Devers was being selfish. That doesn't mean that we stop rooting for him while he's still a member of the team.
  5. The late game blow ups are definitely the most glaring and most memorable. Williams, no doubt, shares in the blame. That said, there is so much that goes on during the course of the game that it's hard, and unfair IMO, to attribute any loss or win to one player. The Yankees are 16-7 in blowout games and 12-18 in one run games. That's the sign of a very good and somewhat unlucky team. It pains me to say it, but I have to give credit where credit is due. That said, since June 13th, the Boston series, the Yankees have a -12 run differential. Maybe the Yankees are coming back down to earth. One can hope.
  6. The Red Sox should be able to win the series against the Rockies. Winning the series against the Rays will be a much bigger test, obviously, but I'm hopeful we can win 2 of 3 at home. What scares me is the tough road that we have coming immediately out of the All-Star break. Last year, we were 10 games over .500 going into the break, and playing very good ball. It all fell apart after that. Hopefully, we'll see a different story this year.
  7. I would leave Rafaela exactly where he is, batting either 8th or 9th. Rafaela seems comfortable there, and his comfort level and confidence are more important than any little effect, from a pure numbers standpoint, moving him up would create. Also, you want your best overall hitters hitting at the top of the lineup, not the guys with the "hot bat". Now, if Rafaela can sustain this level of production and prove himself to be one of the best 4 hitters on the team, then consideration should be made to move him up.
  8. Theo said something to the effect of butting heads with Lucchino over how to put together a team. Lucchino prioritized putting fans in the seats by signing the big names. Theo caved a little. They both admitted that they got a little greedy after winning 2 rings and wanted more, thereby not making the best choices. IMO, both Cherington and Bloom would have made some bolder moves if they had been allowed to stay another year or two. They had to wait until the plan was in place.
  9. It's the nature of being a fan. We root for the laundry, not the player.
  10. That's a shame. I've always liked the guy, even when he was pitching his way to a Cy Young with another team.
  11. Yes, the FO really needs to speak carefully. That's not the first time one of their comments has come back to bite them. As many have said many times, we'll now have to wait and see what they do with the freed up Devers money.
  12. The Giants are 5-10 in the 15 games since Devers joined them, scoring 3.3 runs per game. The Giants certainly didn't get that offensive spark that is so often talked about when adding a new player to the team. Pure speculation, but I'm wondering if Giants players had any reservations about getting Devers, knowing that he put himself ahead of the team while with the Red Sox. It's certainly not the type of attitude that a clubhouse would readily welcome.
  13. History has shown us time and time again that those long-term deals usually don't work out well. And most of that data is from when 'long-term deals' were 6-8 years long. The deals typically look good for the first few years, but once players are in their 30s, they are declining. With that said, more and more long-term deals are being given to players before they reach free agency, meaning (obviously) they are typically younger when they sign the deals. So, the 8-year deal might not be so bad. I still cringe at anything longer.
  14. I feel like, for the most part, Henry's philosophy has been to prioritize the farm system and long-term sustainability as opposed to having a win now philosophy. I think the team might have gotten away from that philosophy a little bit in 2009(?) under Lucchino's influence. But Henry did a complete 180 on his philosophy when he hired Dombrowski. He then reversed course and did another 180 when he hired Bloom. And then was unhappy when Bloom did what he was hired to do. If you want a win now at any cost mentality, that's fine, but then you'll probably feel the consequences of that for years to come.
  15. Far be it from me to defend the Yankees, but they still have the second best run differential in baseball, tied with the Tigers at +103. The Cubs are +108. The Yankees are 7 wins under their Pythagorean W-L. They should have a 4-game lead on the Rays and an 11-game lead over the Blue Jays. Ok, that's enough of that. I really hope the Yankees struggles continue. LOL
  16. Good call. Rafaela gets no love due to his light bat. He has been OPSing .785 since May 1, better than anyone expected.
  17. Devers is likely going through a period of getting acclimated to his new role, just as he did at the beginning of the season when he was adjusting to being a full-time DH. He will likely soon return to being a very good hitter for the next few years. That said, I feel relieved not to have to carry that contract during the latter years.
  18. One of the many beautiful things about this game of baseball that we love is that it is so random and so unpredictable. Anything can happen. Don't rain on my parade.
  19. I was disappointed in the lack of spending in 2024. I understood the lack of spending in the previous seasons, but I felt like the time was right to spend a little more and bust over the luxury tax threshold, if necessary.
  20. I, too, am excited about our young players. Our farm is looking better than it has since Dombrowski. As noted in one of the other threads, our future is bright. Now, to get our act together for the current season...
  21. I would argue that 5 years is too many, but as with most of the big contract players the Red Sox sign, I will be happy to have the player on the team while disliking the contract. If I were the GM (and this is one among many of the reasons why I'm not), I would not extend Bregman for 5 more years.
  22. All of our recent GMs have had their strong points and their shortcomings. IMO, Henry has been a little wishy-washy with how he wants his GMs to go about putting teams together and a little impatient in letting things play out. The turnover of GMs, along with the seemingly changing philosophies, makes it difficult to put together winning teams year after year. I think Breslow did a very good job this offseason. I know that GMs are going to be judged on results, and the results are not there, but I can't really fault Breslow, except for the lack of communication with Devers. I'm 100% with you on not trading top prospects for big rentals, even if we were leading the division.
  23. I get it. I cringe at these contracts, but I get it. My hope is always that the youngsters will become those few really top players. Narvaez is already one of the top catchers in the game. As for the others, there's a reason why they are ranked as highly as they are.
  24. I chose Narvaez over Crochet, just because he is an unexpected huge contributor. We knew what we expected to get from the other three candidates. Narvaez has been a very pleasant surprise. He will likely regress some offensively, but his defense should remain strong.
  25. I guess we'll have to wait and see how he produces once he returns. His swing seems tailor made for Fenway. But 3 years was long enough. I guess we hope that he doesn't opt out so that we can have him for next year.
