I'm guessing one of the reasons is the way modern pitchers pitch. On average they throw harder and they throw more sliders and other breaking balls that put more stress on the arm. Also, I think when we look at pitchers of the past we tend to focus on the ones who were really special, like Gibson, Ryan et all, as if they were typical, which they most certainly weren't.

So you think the 'third time through the order' principle is poppycock and that the real reason for hauling starters earlier now is to cut their innings and their pay?

So what is the point then of pointing to success in the first 10 or 11 PA's as being meaningful?

That's metrics at work, I'm afraid.

Another point about that is that if your best reliever gets the job done, your offense might score another run or more and make it easier in the 9th.

NESN has hired Ellis Burks, Mo Vaughn, Kevin Youkilis and Jonathan Papelbon to make limited appearances on broadcasts this year. Don't know about their on-air talent, but that's some pretty good baseball talent.

And the ones who do opt out often get overpaid in the next contract. Like Sabathia did.

I don't think that's what Tito was doing. Because he wasn't even using Miller as the 8th inning guy. Bryan Shaw was the 8th inning guy. Just look at the box scores for Games 1 and 3 of the 2016 Division Series when Cleveland beat us.

With the notable exception of Andrew Miller and Cody Allen in 2016. Miller was the better pitcher that year, but Tito was using him prior to the 9th and using Allen in the 9th. It worked well, too.

That's what I thought too. But notin's right, he has an opt out after this year as well.

Eck and Rivera are probably the two best closers ever, including the postseason. And yet we remember each of them blowing crucial postseason saves. Eck in 1988 and 1992, Rivera in 2001 and 2004.

Sure, and they were probably hoping Price opted out too. We've said it many times, these big contracts typically only pay off for the team in the first half of the deal, and then become burdens in the second half. We all liked JDM's contract when we signed him. I still think it was a fine signing. Instrumental to the 2018 title. I'm not one of those who wants to see him moved. I'd like to see him stay and rake. But a lot of fans jump ship on a player the minute they think the guy is declining.

Right, and I doubt any general manager has ever said, when the owner gives him a budget of 200 mill, "Screw you, I'm only spending 150." (Pro-rate this example accordingly for small market teams etc.)

I don't think the odds are very good, because we'd have to pay a huge chunk of it. More dead money on the payroll. Better to hope he bounces back and is part of our 2022 championship run.

I mostly agree. And getting a "save" for doing that just shows what a dumb stat it is. On the other hand, it's still a job that needs to be done. And even if it's the 7-8-9 hitters, there's a strong chance you're getting a pinch hitter or two. And if you put a man on base you're back to the top of the order. But in those examples, it's a job you can get your second-best reliever to do.

J. D. is also a veteran hitter with a career .290 BA and .530 SLG. The man knows how to hit and what pitchers are doing to try to get him out. I think there's only one thing to worry about with a guy of his profile, and that's an age-related loss of bat speed.

The thing about Mo was, he had no problem whatsoever if he had to get 4,5 outs or even more for the save. Check out his playoff logs in particular. That really made him special. I think notin is talking about the typical modern closer who only expects to pitch the 9th inning.
