    The thing is, if you're really going to be fair about this, you can't just run away from the vast differences in the money then and now. Keeping Mookie required putting roughly $400 million at risk. Try and find a historical comparative to that.

    Isn't it a little strange we've reached the point that we think a championship season wasn't worth it? If we didn't win in 2018, I shudder to think what the mood of the Nation would be right now.

    Eovaldi shouldn't even be part of this. Yes, $17 million is too much. But he's off the books after 2022.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you were not in favor of signing Mookie long-term because you felt too much of his game was dependent on speed.

    Mookie Betts is an awesome talent and I deeply regret losing him. As far as great modern players are concerned, there's Trout and Betts, and the rest have a long way to go to prove they belong in the same discussion.

    If we had retained Mookie for 375 mill or whatever, I'd be scared about one thing - injury. And not necessarily a major injury. Sometimes apparently minor injuries can mess up a player's career pretty badly.

    In my humble opinion that was just how Henry felt at the time. The words got on record and have been used against him ever since. Which may be part of why he doesn't talk to the media anymore. Also, they kind of instantly repudiated it by offering Lester 135 million, didn't they?

    Ha, you're not. I think this is more about us exonerating Rooster in the leadoff spot being the reason we lost in 1978.

    Very true. But even before 2010 he had been putting up 4 and 5 win seasons. 35.6 bWAR in his Rays career.

    A sort of compromise view is that Henry was deeply soured on mega-contracts by recent spending experiences. And there's little doubt that he was casting an eye in the Rays direction and observing how they were somehow getting so much more out of their limited spending.

    Another point pertinent to 1978 is that the Yankees leadoff hitter that year was Mickey Rivers, with a .302 OBP.

    I'll go a step further. The notion that Henry isn’t spending and isn’t retaining top talent is dumb and whiny.

    Mookie is a great player and may make us regret losing him for years to come. But $400 million is a lot of dough. How's this for a little perspective. We all shudder when we think of the 142 million contract for Crawford. What Mookie reportedly asked for, 420 million, was 3 CRAWFORD CONTRACTS. And please don't anyone try to explain how there's no comparison between the two players. Crawford had been a damn good player when we signed him.

    Do you expect the team to win it all every 3 years now? Henry's won 4 of them. During the same period the Yankees and Dodgers have each won one. But yeah, Henry must not know what he's doing!

    He's trying to use some common sense. You can't just keep spending like drunken sailors.

    "When Henry was spending" Again, our payroll is still one of the 3 highest in baseball. A lot of the guys on that 2018 team became much more expensive since then. It's just the way the MLB system is. And after that 2018 season he forked out 145 mill for Sale, 120 mill for Bogey, and 68 mill for Eovaldi. That's 333 million. And yet people talk like he got cheap.

    You're right, budding was not the right adjective. But he seemed to be on upward track, with 2010 being his best season.

    On paper Crawford was a budding superstar. His last year with the Rays he hit .307 with 19 HR and 90 RBI, and 47 steals. Gold Glove. 7th in MVP voting. 35.6 WAR in his career with the Rays. And he was only 29.

    You're trying to make it a totally black and white, one or the other thing, which it isn't. Signing and retaining excellent players sounds great. But they're super-expensive so you only afford so many of them. We're paying Sale, JDM, Bogaerts and Eovaldi $20 million apiece or so. We still have one of the highest payrolls in the game, in spite of all the bellyaching. Since Henry bought the team he has never failed to spend on it.

    Reality check: both Beni and JBJ took a lot of flak from fans for their ups and downs. The only guy that most people care about losing is Betts.

    MLBTR predicted 2 yrs $16 mil. So it's 50% more money. I think he did well in this market.

    But it was generally agreed here that the $11 million he got for 2020 was several million too high.
