  1. By the same token, baseball-wise it might not have been smart for Bloom to fill in season ticket holders on exactly what was going on with Mookie. And maybe at that point he didn't know himself.
  2. I think Bloom would have known virtually from the moment he was hired that trading Price and/or Eovaldi wasn't going to be the answer to the payroll issues.
  3. Nothing to do with the prospect of losing Mookie to free agency and getting nothing for him?
  4. So they're PTBNML - Players to Be Named Much Later.
  5. To me it's not really that complicated. They went all in big time in 2018 and 2019. It paid off fantastically well in 2018. But then a whole bunch of things went wrong and the fallout was extreme. In my opinion the team did some hard things that had to be done. The on-field results in 2020 were ugly. But it was a perfect year to tank, honestly.
  6. I can't see the "applauded" part.
  7. The message he gave to the press about it was much vaguer than that.
  8. Everybody blames somebody. Wasn't that a big hit for Dean Martin?
  9. You got Paxton back.
  10. I think we all know what it means. It means making zero or little effort to win games in a particular season in order to reap the future benefits. I won't say it's wrong or right. I don't blame the Red Sox for doing it in 2020. I'm not a big fan of this expression, but I find myself using it more and more: "It is what it is."
  11. Yeah, the Astros really upped the ante with their 'tank and then cheat' strategy...
  12. Some good GM's have started their tenures in tank mode, including DD with the Tigers and Theo with the Cubs...
  13. If I was a Dodgers fan I'd be happy. But man, $254 million plus luxury tax, with a pandemic going on, is an amazing amount of payroll.
  14. I don't remember anything about Price having a no-trade about to kick in. I think the offers for Mookie were limited mainly because it was one year of control and a $27 million salary.
  15. I like Berger because he's got a funky swing. I find the guys with their own personal swings like that are the most fun to watch. Spieth's swing is a little unusual too. And like you say, they both seem like great guys.
  16. There wasn't much Bloom could do once he received his instructions, I agree. There were things Henry and Werner could have done, but they chose to tank.
  17. I'm not blaming anything on Bloom. It was an organizational decision to trade Mookie and Price, and then there was that pesky little pandemic knocking out E-Rod and others, and taking 92 games off the sked, and Cora being gone... It wasn't so much about Bloom inheriting a horrible team, as it was a convergence of factors that dictated tanking 2020.
  18. With the re-signing of Justin Turner, the Dodgers 2021 luxury tax number is now an eye-popping $254 million. That crazy freakin' Friedman!
  19. So you're saying there was no hope of improving on 84-78.
  20. There are plenty of similar examples.
  21. Are we talking about improving over 2018's record, or improving over 2019's record?
  22. Jordan Spieth is back on his game and doing amazing things. In two rounds at Pebble Beach, he's had two eagles with holeouts from the fairway, one on the par-four 10th and one on the par-four 16th. Pretty much as good as two holes-in-one. He's got a two-stroke lead heading to the final round. Can he finish it off?
  23. In the words of the new leader of the free world, "Come on, man." I don't think there's any empirical evidence to suggest that championship teams standing still have done a lot worse than the ones who made a bunch of changes. If there is, though, I'd like to see it.
  24. I'm really tired of hearing about the cliff, moon. I think all us posters here are intelligent enough to realize what led to this, and don't need to have it explained over and over. Can we stop using that word, or at least phase it out or something?
  25. Another hilariously off-topic thread going here.
