  1. I agree, but I think the only fair way to do it is to also include revenue ranks.
  2. There has to be some sort of defeatism on the part of the Twins. They must feel like they're going to lose before they hit the field. It's the only thing I can figure.
  3. Updated for today's 7-1 trouncing: 108-38 .740
  4. Now that's something the Red Sox have never done, at least.
  5. We were 8.5 games ahead of the Yankees about 3 weeks ago and now we're 1.5 games behind them. That's a 10 game swing. You can't really blame people for being a little demoralized about that.
  6. Here are the incredible, mind-boggling numbers for the 20 year period 2002-2021 up to last night's game: Regular season Yankees 91 Twins 36 Postseason Yankees 16 Twins 2 Total Yankees 107 Twins 38 That's a .738 winning pct. for the Yankees in 145 games, equivalent to 120 wins in a 162 game schedule. The Twins have not won a season series against the Yankees since 2001-they tied 3-3 in 2005 and 2006. And they have lost 5 postseason series, winning no more than 1 game in any of them, and 1 Wild Card game.
  7. Except in the infamous 2014-15 offseason...
  8. Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't you been somewhat critical of the Red Sox for not spending more this year, for deciding to stay under the tax threshold after re-setting last year?
  9. No team will ever do this. It's too much of an administrative hassle.
  10. Sure, but you devoted your whole last paragraph to Dombrowski.
  11. So this is all about Dombrowski. OK.
  12. It's one of the confounding mysteries of baseball. If there's no such thing as momentum, how come the Yankees have been beating the Twins' heads in without fail for the last two decades or so? I'll compile the numbers, but first I have to make sure my stomach is fully settled, because I don't want to get sick on my keyboard.
  13. The teams that have been winning it all since 2016 have had pretty hefty payrolls. And teams like Pittsburgh and Miami have no chance. The success stories of low-payroll teams are the Rays and the A's. And you have to respect what they've been doing, absolutely. It takes a lot of smarts to overcome the payroll deficiencies.
  14. Based on the accounts I've read, he can still throw 96-97 when he wants. But whether out of caution or out of developing a new mix, his regular velocity is obviously lower. Maybe the new Chris Sale doesn't want to be the old Chris Sale, he wants to be an effective pitcher who can mix up speeds and not overtax his repaired arm.
  15. 1972 was my first heartbreak season with the Sox. I was listening on the radio when Luis Aparicio fell rounding third in Detroit. There were a few connections between that team and the late Seventies teams. Also, in 1974 the Red Sox had a nice lead at one time and collapsed late. That was the first year I went to Fenway.
  16. Yeah, we've been too busy moaning and groaning to appreciate that this guy is on the borderline of being a premier hitter.
  17. Schwarber does seem like a good fit for the Sox. Hope we keep him.
  18. "Snail in an oil slick". I like it.
  19. The 1975-1978 seasons were like an epic tragedy. 1977 was also tough. We had a 5 game lead over the Yankees in June, and won 97 games.
  20. As a man who lived through 1978 (barely) I can honestly say that this is nothing like 1978. This is disappointing. 1978 was devastating.
  21. Yeah, Schwarber has a .500 OBP. But the offense in general was MIA in that Yankee series. It was a very demoralizing display at such a crucial time.
  22. And sadly, it didn't pay off in any offense against the Yankees.
  23. Big picture please. The Red Sox under Henry have had one of the highest payrolls year in and year out and have won 4 championships. Pretty unlikely they would have won any without some of the high priced talent we've had.
  24. But it's no accident that the teams with the highest values are the Yankees, Dodgers and Red Sox.
