    I don't know that he isn't worth it. It's not easy to evaluate a catcher's defensive value. It seems pretty clear to me that CERA has no impact at all on how the team evaluates him.

    IMHO Sale and Eovaldi were never the issue with keeping Betts. Their deals weren't signed until they gave up on Betts. The more I think of it, the more I think Henry and Werner were really pissed about Mookie's stance (the 420 million counter offer plus earlier extension rejections) and closed the books on him.

    It was a small sample but a decent sample. 2020 of course was a weird year all around. His pro-rated salary was a little over 6 million. Bottom line, he's had one bad season, 2019, on this contract.

    There's a good chance that 2021 is his career year. I'd project him for a 3-3.5 WIN season in 2022.

    It's all about his health. He started being a better pitcher in 2018. The jump in his K/BB ratio doesn't lie.

    Eovaldi is pitching up to his potential this year. It was a very defensible signing by Dombrowski. $68 mill was a lot for a guy with Eovaldi's injury history, but he's got elite stuff and is a great competitor.

    If CERA was as big a deal to the Red Sox as it is to you, they never would have let Leon go. Me and MVP just think you make too much of it. The CERA comparisons with Vaz and Plawecki are all over the place. They scream randomness. There's nothing that shows Vaz isn't doing a good job 'handling the staff'.

    Yeah, I was looking at that. If the Orioles use an 'every fifth game' schedule we'll miss him. If they use an 'every fifth day' schedule we'll see him. I suspect they'll use the former because Means is such a valuable property, was on the IL, and they have no real incentive to win games. But we'll see.

    I don't think it's a straw man to say your adverse opinion of him and desire to replace him has a lot to do with CERA comparisons.
