    Who wants to increase HRs? It seems to me one of the biggest complaints now is about too many guys swinging for the fences.

    It appears the ball isn't actually any deader. But the seams are higher I believe - which is probably part of the reason MLB cracked down on sticky stuff - the higher seams were sort of an appeasement to the pitchers. That's my conspiracy theory, anyway.

    In one of those docs on the '67 Red Sox, Yaz talks about how tough Lonborg was. Yaz said Lonborg would come up to him and ask him if there was anyone he wanted beaned LOL And Lonborg knew there might be reprisal against him personally for beaning someone.

    Agreed. And Lonborg had a great season in 1967. Over his career, he was a decent to good pitcher and no more. So we have Gibson and Pedro so far. And there would be a handful of others. We're talking about 'generational' talents.

    When you lose a game you can usually point to several reasons. But a bad call against you can certainly be one of the reasons.

    In terms of who is getting the most wins out of their payroll, the Rays are beating the (use favorite expletive) out of everyone.

    Much of the talk about Bogaerts and Devers on this forum is about their mediocre to bad defense. Mookie was that extreme rarity, a complete player.

    Very true. Ironically, perhaps, it's the Marlins who have the 2 championships.

    I would actually say no to that question. That approach of being close to the limit started in the Theo Epstein glory years. And I think it has a lot to do with our 4 championships. Nick, I do enjoy and respect your opinions here, but to me it sounds a little like you've got 'Rays on the brain', as in, why can't we be the Rays? First of all, I wholeheartedly agree that the Rays are doing a phenomenal job with their payroll limitations. But I don't see how you can dismiss the fact that we're the ones with the most rings this century, and they still don't have one.

    You're right, I'm generalizing. I'm not talking about every single fan. But I do think you get a decent feel for the way fans think on forums like this. My point is mainly about Betts and how I don't blame him for not having any 'loyalty' to the Red Sox. If there is a two-way street, it's a cold-blooded one, IMHO. Players want money. Fans want performance.

    But fans aren't loyal to the players. This forum makes that obvious. The emotional fans heap abuse on them for playing bad in a particular game. The rational fans talk about how they can be replaced cheaper next year. Am I wrong about that?

    Inevitably, when people talk about how great and how mean the old-time pitchers they were, they talk about Gibson. Yes, Gibson was awesome. Now, give me a list of all the other pitchers of that era who were like Gibson. The Red Sox sure as heck didn't have them. The names I remember from listening on the radio starting in 1969 were more like Sonny Siebert and Ray Culp.

    I'm trying for the perfect equilibrium where I accept the outcome. Zen Fandom or something like that. Mind you I can only do this because the 4 rings have made me fat and contented as a fan.

    Well, what if they only go 3-3 in these games? I'm not sure I'd call that a total meltdown, but it could put them in jeopardy. Jays take 2 of 3 from Yankees and go 5-1 overall. That would pass us. 4-2 would tie. Yankees take 1 from Jays and 2 from Rays. They would stay ahead of us.

    I think most of us have some reservations about the changes in the way the game is played, but what's the use of complaining.

    Yeah but a lot of that is managers relying on spreadsheets that tell them to hook the guy even if he's pitching well. As for Sale, he's coming off TJ surgery so some caution is understandable.
