    Put it this way, 'play-in' games have become part of sports terminology. And these Wild Card games sure have all the earmarks of 'play-in' games. You're not in unless you win.

    This is a wide-open internet forum with very diverse attitudes and opinions. I see no 'groupthink' thing whatsoever. You'll get clusters who agree with each other, of course, but that's only natural. I think it's possible to have two separate arguments, one about the baseball business decision part and one about the "moral" part. I was using the Mike Trout injury as evidence of the astronomical risks associated with any of these mega-contracts.

    I know what the technical rules are and I'm sure mvp does too. MLB keeps shoving new "innovations" down our throats all the time. It doesn't mean we have to respect them. As fans we can have a little latitude on how we think, no?

    Let me clarify my position then. I sure as hell think Mookie Betts deserves 30 million for a season of baseball more than Adam Sandler deserves it for a movie. That has nothing to do with whether I think Mookie should get a 12 year guaranteed contract.

    Sure, but that's got nothing to do with what I'm saying. It's got nothing to do with deserve. It's all about the risk.

    It's mvp's philosophy that these are 'play-in' games and you're not in the playoffs unless you win them. He might be incorrect technically, but he's entitled to look at them that way, no?

    Straw man arguments? We're just talking about whether it's a wise baseball business decision to give any player a 10-12 year contract.

    Yes, and I think it's getting more that way all the time. It's impossible to choose a MOY by any meaningful criteria.

    But we also cut payroll by letting JBJ go, trading Beni etc. - doesn't that have to be factored in too?

    Cash is a good example of why it's so hard to evaluate the impact of the manager. Is he getting great performance out of players who aren't as talented, or is it the GM who's finding talented players who are undervalued?

    It's probably the most meaningless award of them all. They generally give it to the guy whose team seemed to 'exceed expectations' the most.

    Mike Trout missed all but 36 games of the 2021 season because of a right calf strain. You could make an argument that it's 100% irrational to give any player a deal this long. Even if the player's skills hold up, the injury demon is always there waiting.

    Well, we spent a lot of time talking about how we faded after a great start. But it was that great first half that gave us just enough of a cushion. The Jays paid the price for a disappointing first half.
