  1. I don't disagree with any of that. But I think the same principle applies on offense. A single at-bat that results in a hit or walk can be the turning point in a game and 'open the floodgates' too. What WAR seems to indicate is that offense is more important than fielding simply because of the volume of opportunities. Every single plate appearance can be a difference-maker. Just my take too.
  2. That's true, but in this case the "rule" seems to be purely anecdotal.
  3. Confession: I'm sort of itching for an argument today. It's been so freaking dull here lately!
  4. But Bogaerts, and the infamous Jeter, seem like good examples of why that may be a fallacy.
  5. Bottom line, Gonzo and Iggy are about 10 WAR players for their careers. Bogey is at 30 WAR and counting. Offense is much more valuable.
  6. That defensive porn stuff doesn't do much for me. I like the fact that WAR demonstrates how overrated flashy defense can be. A Xander Bogaerts is worth multiples of an A-Gon or an Iggy.
  7. Yes, but his offense was terrible and he also missed a lot of games. His 2006 fWAR was 1.6 and his bWAR was 1.2. Theo was so impressed that he signed Julio Lugo to replace him.
  8. But the people who say most relievers vary like crazy from one year to the next are also right. We invested money in Barnes last year and he turned to crap right after that. Spending doesn't guarantee a thing.
  9. Based on what numbers? His WAR with the Red Sox was nothing special.
  10. I'm very relaxed. I'm also realistic though, I think. That trend with shorter outings for starters is not going to reverse...it's a snowball rolling downhill. Another point about doubleheaders - if the average fan thinks the game is too slow and too long now, it seems unlikely they're going to want twice in one day... I think that idea actually does appeal more to hardcore fans like us.
  11. I don't think anyone disagrees about how important the pen is. The trickier question is how much money to allocate to it. A big question for the Red Sox is whether to leave Whitlock and Houck in the pen or give them a shot at starting. We've had lots of chat about that here, of course!
  12. Only one mistake I can see - Lackey was traded.
  13. One practical problem with doubleheaders now is that with starters only going 4-5 innings, they could instantly fry a bullpen.
  14. A true but tangential point.
  15. The timing for this is great, huh? We just had to endure a 60 game season, and we're all still dealing with COVID. What a perfect time for another disruption!
  16. Yikes, that was a bad Mr. Magoo on my part. I read 'Pedro' instead of Nomar.
  17. Norm Charlton played a significant role in the Red Sox winning a couple of rings.
  18. I think it ended perfectly. With a ring on his finger and best wishes on his new contract.
  19. The law of averages says the M's will make the playoffs some year. They seem to be really trying now, at least.
  20. One thing I might need to put on my bucket list is to learn the rules of cricket. I'm not necessarily interested in watching in games, but it's kind of embarrassing not even knowing the rules. Hell, if this baseball season gets f**ed up, I might have to go all in on cricket.
  21. Holy crap, I didn't realize that. That's hilarious. When you look at how popular the game is in other countries, maybe some Charlie Finley type will try to introduce a streamlined North American version.
  22. Lester had a great career. And 3 rings to show for it.
  23. Beckett best fWAR seasons with Red Sox: 2007 5.7 2008 4.3 2009 4.2 2011 3.8 One great season and 3 good to very good seasons, I guess.
  24. I feel the same way as you two, but according to that article harmony posted, cricket has 5 times as many "followers" as baseball worldwide. We are obviously narrow-minded old North American men LOL
  25. Good point, Denny. If pace and play and lack of action were the big issues, football would be in at least as much trouble as baseball.
