The Sox team ERA is 3.98, there are 3 teams at 5 or over, so yes, there are worse. The 2025 Sox are a painfully frustrating team, though, that's for sure.
You really have no idea that Ortiz wasn't just legit trying to help or that Devers wasn't a jerk about it. But those possibilities don't fit the narrative, so let's just tear down Ortiz, character and all.
Everybody that was on the 2003 list of names that had a positive test got a free pass for it, as far as I know.
Frankly I'm fine with him just hitting one dinger in the series! Over the 3 games it was kind of a wash. He hurt us with that one at-bat, but he didn't kill us. He was 0 for 5 in the game we won. He was 2 for 12 in the 3 games. His OPS dropped 10 points in the 3 games.
The Red Sox just gave up another pile of unearned runs on the weekend.
The Sox have allowed .61 unearned runs per game. The MLB average is .31 per game. Seems like...double. That can't be good.
The Red Sox are tied with the Rockies for worst Fielding Percentage in MLB at .977.
I can see that the Sox grade better in some of the advanced defensive metrics that are based on range and all that good stuff. I will leave that part to our resident Captain Nemo level data divers.
I can see both sides of the fielding debate we've had here. I agree that range is a huge factor. But I also think plain old muffed plays can be pretty important too.
So basically just a thread for anything at all about fielding.
I'm not trying to sugarcoat anything, danny. Trust me, I've been doing my fair share of complaining here since Henry lost his marbles in 2019.
Trading Betts and all the new approach crap has generally been a catastrophe.
I'm fine with losing Devers, though. It was a bad contract and he had a bad attitude.
And they scored 15 runs in their last 5 games WITH Devers.
And they scored 14 runs in their last 3 games WITHOUT Devers.
Losing Devers hurts the offense, but little cherry-picked samples don't tell us anything.
Let's not forget that the first 2 problems in the whole sequence of problems were:
1) Devers's defensive play at 3B had some of the worst ratings in MLB over a period of years.
2) In spite of 1) Devers believed he was a good defensive player and saw no reason why he should change position.
