  1. That question is only pertinent if we're working from a premise that all Breslow needed to do was replace Sale. Objectively speaking, what Breslow did was swap Sale for Giolito and Grissom, and that cost us $36.25 million in AAV. And before Giolito's injury the projected 2024 WAR's for Giolito and Sale were about equal. So even ignoring what actually happened, Breslow did absolute zero to upgrade the rotation.
  2. There was deferred money in Sale's extension. Guess they thought of it just a tiny bit late...
  3. I'm not sure this ever happened with Mookie. There is however a contingent of Sox fans who think Mookie was the one who wanted out.
  4. They would at least retain the ability to rework the deal between now and November if Bregman is interested.
  5. We don't really know what kind of return he would bring. He's on the IL right now, he's guaranteed a lot of money over the next 2 years and he has opt outs at the end of this year and next. It'd be a PR debacle because it'd be one more sign to the fans that this team still isn't really serious about competing.
  6. Someone else mentioned this idea. It's one of those ideas that seems to make some sense until you really think about it. The problem is that it could only be a verbal agreement, and as such it would be worth less than zero. Let's not forget that one possible scenario is that Bregman's quad injury turns out to be a big deal. You think the Sox would honor their verbal agreement if it is? Once you trade him you're in the same position as the other 28 teams who don't have any control over him.
  7. It's not so much the signing as that it was the only signing.
  8. Yes, things are shaping up nicely for another confusing and frustrating deadline for the Sox.
  9. The return from the trade stunk, that's for sure, but it'll always be Henry and his cohorts who wouldn't pay up to keep a Hall of Famer in his prime in Boston.
  10. He's not exactly Jonathan Swift or Joseph Heller. 🙃
  11. Signing Giolito, trading Sale and doing nothing else was a very questionable course of action on the 2024 rotation.
  12. To me Henry will always be the stiff who traded Betts.
  13. Devers refused, it's pretty simple. No need for head spinning.
  14. Wow, until now I underestimated how much this is a racial thing for you.
  15. They actually won 3 of their first 4 without Devers. Weirdly enough, the Red Sox and Giants are both 4-7 since the trade.
  16. bWAR disagrees. Campbell had a bWAR of -0.9 in 263 PA. Hamilton's is +0.2 in 116 PA. fWAR disagrees somewhat with bWAR. Campbell -0.2 Hamilton -0.3
  17. It's really hard for Cora or Breslow or any of them to just flat out tell us what they really think, because if they say the wrong thing we'll hang them for it! Twilight of his career, bridge year, full throttle... Cora made that statement about the 'third base promise' coming from Bloom, and he has taken plenty of flak for saying that. I don't blame these guys for being very careful what they say...
  18. I believe a lot of it is based on the theory that it keeps players from being worn out at the end of the season. I agree that the fact that it also gets bench players some time adds to it making sense.
  19. We're all just playing the guessing game here...
  20. I hope that takes care of the issue for you and it's all good going forward.
  21. Me too. Priester has 'bad peripherals', say those who still like the trade...we'll see how it plays out.
  22. When I say it was a big problem I'm looking through the hindsight filter of Raffy being traded. However it went down, the team clearly thought Raffy had become a big problem.
  23. Certainly nice to see Anthony get 3 hits, regardless of who they were off.
  24. Blowout games never tell us much. According to ChatGPTCaptainObvious, blowout wins generally occur because a) the opposing starter doesn't have his good stuff; and b) the opposing manager tosses in the towel on a lost game and sends out his scrub relievers.
