  1. You can blame Bloom for Rodriguez. He signed him to be our top lefty reliever. Cora is supposed to use him.
  2. If a reliever pitches about 60 innings you should multiply by 3. So a 3 WAR for a reliever is a monster season.
  3. Max, you contradicted yourself. After correctly pointing out that a lot of our scoring was attributable to the Reds using their crappier relievers, you turned around and blamed Cora for not going all in to chase a win.
  4. Yep, crappy starting pitching and crappy defense. Bullpen has largely been great.
  5. Are we really incapable of adjusting for that?
  6. There's always rate calculations...
  7. I get that, but I don't think it makes a sub-zero WAR good.
  8. To be exact, it was 3 games and they traded Vaz. But you already won this argument. They should have cleaned house.
  9. Joely's FIP is much better than his actual ERA. One of those guys. Based on his actual results, he's below replacement level.
  10. Frankly we only have one guy, Sale, who's a good bet to get past 5. Whitlock will become another, hopefully.
  11. 2014 Max and Cole. 2 sure things in the last decade. Actually Max was more of an "after the fact" sure thing. Waiting around for sure things just doesn't cut it.
  12. Once again we made a "gutsy comeback attempt". But there have been too many of those, because we have fallen behind early and big so often. We have all the classic hallmarks of a mildly entertaining .500 team. Yes, I'm depressed about it.
  13. There are very few sure bets with pitchers. The sure bets go for around $324 million now.
  14. Joely's career bWAR, BTW, is -1.2. Expectations shouldn't be very high.
  15. I guess it depends on whether you think it's important to have a good lefty in the pen.
  16. He's hitting well, no question. The only issue is that he's a high-priced DH. Personally I don't mind having a high-priced DH who can really rake, so I'm good with it.
  17. Right. Kike was the #1 shortstop on Opening Day.
  18. True, but he also has a career fWAR of 1.0 at age 31. He's simply not very good. A Diekman-esque signing.
  19. Yes, it does seem symptomatic of Bloom's questionable "try anything" approach to defense.
  20. I think the 2023 Sox are exactly what their record says right now. We're on pace to win 84 games. It almost seems like that's what Henry and Bloom were shooting for.
  21. It's a toss-up whether that's a Cora problem or a Bloom problem. Bloom could have signed an actual shortstop but he decided that Kike would suffice there.
  22. Don't think anyone said he did.
  23. But the Yanks are 4.5 games ahead of us in spite of all their injuries and bad numbers. Which shows that this kind of analysis means nothing.
  24. There's no guaranteed formula, but there is a correlation between payroll and winning, with the Yankees and Dodgers being the prime examples. And as you noted, the Red Sox in particular have done well converting their high-priced acquisitions into championships. Spending like Cohen did this past offseason is probably just stupid, though.
