Maybe Paxton had a clause in his contract that he gets Father's Day off.

Modern baseball, folks. Paxton will have a week off between starts, while Ort starts a game against the Yankees.

Why didn't Paxton start this game? He last pitched on June 12. I haven't seen any explanation and no one else seems to be asking the question. Weird.

Houck is going to be gone for a while, so that's a blow to our chances. Though obviously it could have been a lot worse.

There may be some negative developments in modern players too. Maybe their increased size and muscularity has made them more injury-prone. Also, modern players might be more subject to things like lack of hustle and mental errors, due to the amount of money in the game, the general move away from hard-nosed disciplinarian managerial approach etc. Note that I'm not stating any of that as firm beliefs...just possibilities to be considered.

Crazy as it seems, this team could still make the playoffs, and if they do, it will have a big impact on how Bloom is viewed.

The debate about teams from the present vs. teams from the past seems a bit pointless to me. There are changes that come from technological "advances" and from cultural influences etc. Whatever era it is, you're seeing the best baseball players. As for basketball, those Bird and Magic teams were great, obviously, as were the Jordan teams. LeBron and Steph Curry are pretty damn good too and have multiple rings. They would have been good back then too.

The team that Bloom inherited was coming off an 84 win season and had a lot of expensive players and a very depleted farm. We can certainly question a lot of his moves, but he did inherit a lot of issues.

Take it for what it's worth, but an article in The Athletic suggests the Sox have been looking for pitching help, and are still talking about upgrading the 2023 team, with no thoughts of a deadline selloff.
