  1. True, although he probably didn't realize he'd be playing shortstop. If he'd known that he would have known the Sox weren't going to be better. Either way he gets to keep the $10 mill, though, just like Kluber does...
  2. No worries though, it's gonna be awesome. Bloom said so. Of course he also said this year was gonna be way better than last year. Hmmm, can we really trust this guy?
  3. All he had to do was sign Jose Iglesias, who has been able to do no better than a minor league deal with the San Diego Shortstops.
  4. As for Yoshida, yes, his bat is good. But he's a poor defender and baserunner, so his WAR is 1.0, which means he's barely on pace to earn his $18 million.
  5. 32-33 with a run differential of 320-321. If Bloom's goal for 2023 was to build a prototypical .500 team, he succeeded brilliantly!
  6. The one caveat being that the Yankees without Judge are not a good offensive team. But hopefully they keep it going. To me it's especially encouraging to see Whitlock being able to go that deep in games.
  7. Good point, moon. Bogaerts was in a nasty slump for a while there, owing partly to a sore wrist, apparently. But let's take a look at some hard cold metrics: Xander Bogaerts fWAR 1.8 bWAR 1.7 FUBAR 1.75 Kike Hernandez fWAR -0.4 bWAR -0.3 FUBAR -0.35 Yes, I think that qualifies as making the team worse.
  8. Neither the long term deals nor the short term deals have been working, so it's best to stay away from starting pitchers altogether.
  9. How many top starting pitchers have never had a long term contract?
  10. To be fair, Bloom has been allowed to put 3 long term, big-money deals on the books-Devers, Story and Yoshida. No starting pitchers on that list though, of course. Hopefully that comes next.
  11. If a closer blows around 10% of his save opportunities, he's a great closer. It's a game of percentages.
  12. Yep. And we were supposed to be better than last year. Way better.
  13. The total guaranteed money that Eovaldi and Wacha got between them was $60 mill. You could almost call that the bargain bin in 2023 economic terms.
  14. *Sigh* Hopefully he's back some time this year.
  15. Hopefully Cole will chock a bit tonight. Dude is good though.
  16. "Starter" actually has two meanings in baseball.
  17. Again, does this mean we should hate the Raffy extension? I think one of the main reasons that Wacha and Eovaldi are lamented is that they were not at all expensive compared to some of the other deals handed out, and they were hanging around a lot time. They were there for the taking.
  18. Love the Kluber you're with?
  19. That's not longer than I expected, unfortunately.
  20. He actually hit well in September in both seasons and in the 2021 postseason. Cool weather hitter or something like that.
  21. It could have been done a bit better methinks, but that's another matter.
  22. I was referring to the guy's now-well-publicized non-baseball issues.
  23. Yep, keep Chaim out front alternately offering valid explanations and pure lies.
  24. xwOBA, now there's an acronym that really rolls off the tongue.
  25. The 5 year plan idea makes a lot of sense. It explains why they held back on spending this year and why they keep signing starting pitchers to 1 year deals. Presumably they'll make some big moves next offseason. But man, are they going to endure a lot of abuse in the meantime.
