  1. I think your hypothetical has to include Giolito getting injured. Besides, they would have seen in spring that Houck had taken a giant leap forward.
  2. Atlanta gave Sale a 2 year deal for $38 million, plus they have a club option for a third year at $18 million. The Red Sox are paying $17 million of the guaranteed $38 million. Thus Atlanta has control over Sale for 3 years but are only actually on the hook for $21 million.
  3. fWAR's at the season's halfway point: Sale 3.0 Grissom -0.9
  4. Eovaldi's 2018 salary was $2 million.
  5. Romy Gonzalez, AKA Senor Clutch.
  6. Sorry, I made you do that work for nothing. I was asking moon for examples of deadline trades that involved "getting good talent without giving up better prospects by taking on bloated contracts."
  7. Any past examples?
  8. I didn't know the teams had that much say in it.
  9. The OPS has been going up. He has pop and he has speed.
  10. In recent years it rarely gets out of my thoughts.
  11. And the next time someone uses the now hackneyed line "I'll drive him to the airport myself" they should be suspended for a week.
  12. Now if you find a spell check that actually works we'll be all set...
  13. It's the Armchair Wheeler Dealer Syndrome.
  14. This can never be said enough.
  15. He's been contributing some on offense too, no?
  16. Accounting is the same. Following all the rules and regulations and standards can be deadly boring. It's only when you get to be a little creative and play in the margins a bit to the advantage of your client that you feel like you're doing something worthwhile.
  17. The good news is, in spite of bombing out so far on the Sale trade and the Giolito signing, Breslow is still looking pretty damn good with his overall performance.
  18. Somehow I think Houck would have found his way into the 2024 rotation.
  19. Or both - like what us accountants and lawyers do.
  20. Right. And that bullpen game pretty much led to Cora having to use Campbell last night. Fortunately it all worked out for us.
  21. Losing Betts was of course the prime example of this ownership not spending when it should have.
  22. It's tricky stuff. If you wait for them to prove themselves the price tag can escalate pretty quickly. What's the exactly right time to do it?
  23. Sure, but I think complaining is understandable when the Red Sox win 78 games 2 years in a row and we see teams like the Yanks/Dodgers/Phillies spending and winning. In spite of what's going on with the Sox right now, spending does have a high correlation with winning. And good cheap players don't stay that way long. Extensions for good young players are spending too.
  24. And my pet theory is that the budget they gave Breslow forced him to free up some money somehow. Giolito was signed just days after they traded Sale.
