    moon, it's all about the lack of commitment at the top. If someone told you before the last offseason that the sum of the moves to the rotation would be as follows: 1) Trade Sale 2) Sign Giolito 3) Absolutely nothing else-even if a couple of guys (Giolito, Whitlock) go down for the season in a hurry you would have wanted to slug them. It's all about the pitching. As far as position players go, we've had a lot of good stuff and more on the way with the big prospects. But they continue to criminally neglect the pitching. And as we can see now, Andrew Bailey is not in fact a magician.

    The worst possible thing Breslow can do is replicate Bloom's indecisive look, and he knows it. I don't envy him right now.

    It's really looking like the sell lane now. They're 2 games out of the playoffs today and the pitching is trending toward disastrous. There have been a lot of good developments, but I can't really see much hope for the pitching the rest of the way. They'd have to acquire 2-3 decent arms and we know that ain't happening.

    I don't know, like I say, tough spot. Much too similar to the spot Bloom found himself in. No clear good options. But this is what they keep doing to themselves with their half-ass offseasons.

    They just might have to sell. The pitching is falling apart. Houck is probably wearing down. No one really knows when Slaten or Martin will be back. Among other problems. Breslow is in a very tough spot, especially since he's already promised to pick a lane.

    The fact they didn't replace the long gone Giolito even though he was supposed to be an innings eater tells you all you need to know. They were being cheap and doing the bare minimum (if that) to upgrade the rotation, just like they did in the Bloom years. There's some bad luck involved with Sale and Giolito, sure, but it's the underlying philosophy that really sucks.

    They're paying $17 million of the $27.5 million, so it would only have cost an additional $10.5 million to keep him. If they saved the whole $27.5 million it would be a different conversation.

    I think they've done a great job lowering our expectations for what constitutes success.

    Right. Of course Paxton was never in Sale's league. All it shows is that teams are willing to roll the dice on guys with that kind of injury history, because starting pitching with any kind of credentials is just such a precious commodity.

    When he starts using Horn and Anderson in higher leverage situations, you'll find out.

    FanGraphs has our chances at making the playoffs at 38.9% now. So we have a 61.1% chance of missing the playoffs for the third year in a row. But sure, forget about the nasty facts and wave the pom-poms.

    This is lame stuff and adds nothing to any discussion. At least I tried to articulate my position.

    It's not about one series, not for me anyway. I think our pitching staff is in the process of unraveling and that it has a lot to do with the blunders and lack of commitment of the guys who run things. I'm not blaming the players or the manager. I think they're doing their best.

    And we've all been around to see Mookie Betts traded.

    People are going to react the way they react. No need for counseling. The Sox won 78 games in 2022 and 78 games in 2023 and are out of the last wild card spot for 2024 right now. Not sure why we should be all sunshine and roses.

    You're kind of getting on the high horse here, man. Your first post today said this weekend sucked. You can always put people on ignore or scroll past the negative ones.

    They had the option of having them both. That was certain to yield at least as many innings as only having one of them.

    But what we're talking about here isn't even the real world. It's just a baseball team.

    For me the whining is cathartic and therefore improves my mental health. My whining is principally about ownership and their failure to be fully invested in the team. I just don't trust them any more.

    It's accurate that we're outside of a playoff spot right now.

    This team sucks on Fridays and sucks against lefty starters, so this series didn't line up well.

    James Paxton is not an unreasonable comp for Sale. Similar age and innings history since 2019. Not as good quality innings as Sale. The Dodgers are probably just fine with their investment in him.

    And the Giolito signing was a weird one, too. Not just because the guy was so bad at the end of last year, but the contract was structured so that if he pitched well he would likely opt out after one year. That's some solution to the rotation! The only conclusion is that the team wasn't really all in, for the 3rd row in a row. Now we have a pitching staff that's ready to implode.
