  1. I know. It just gives you this s***** feeling every time we play there. Definitely the worst venue in baseball.
  2. They do get paid a lot, but some of the s*** that Red Sox managers have taken, I wouldn't wish on anybody. Don Zimmer, John McNamara, Grady Little...they all had costly f***ups, for which many Boston fans have never forgiven them. Even Francona with 2 titles has taken an inordinate amount of abuse.
  3. But good players can have huge variances in performance. Buchholz had a 4.56 ERA in 2012. He has a 1.71 ERA in 2013. Same player, hugely different results. How much can be attributed to a change in management? Nobody knows. A lot of this stuff is completely intangible.
  4. No question that good players are required. Casey Stengel had some great quotes about managing. Earl Weaver did too. Looking at it a different way, some managers can really f*** things up, whether it's Valentine with the clubhouse and the media, or Ron Washington with the in-game decisions. So maybe the test of a good manager is that they f*** things up as little as possible. Farrell seems to have minimized the f***ups so far.
  5. I agree that it's not an easy job. My own rough formula for the components of the job is something like this: 1) Managing the clubhouse and the media 50% 2) Managing the pitching staff (such as not burning out the bullpen) 30% 3) Offensive strategy and in-game decisions 20%
  6. I don't think Lee is a realistic option either. Papelbon could be available but I think it's highly unlikely the Sox would have interest. For one thing the back end of our bullpen has been pretty good. For the other Paps is just too expensive. I've been one of the Papelbon supporters. I think he'll hold up over his contract. I think the adverse opinions on Papelbon come from two things: 1) his contract; 2) his personality. I think we would be better served to look at some other starting pitchers besides Lee that might become available as salary dumps.
  7. The Yankees are harder to get rid of than cockroaches.
  8. Dempster is a maestro of mediocrity.
  9. I like Mauer a lot. But he has to be downgraded quite a bit for his mediocre power numbers. Mauer's career averages are pretty close to J. D. Drew's.
  10. Trade Iggy? That's an abhorrent thought right now.
  11. Napoli's philosophy seems to be 'Swing hard in case you hit it.' Personally I can't argue with his results so far. It was good to see him get that 'productive out' on Thursday though.
  12. I think Napoli's numbers to date give a solid example of how a hitter can be very productive with high K's. Middlebrooks' numbers, OTOH, give a solid example of how a hitter can be very unproductive with high K's.
  13. Whaddya expect from a stunned crackhead like Washington?
  14. Fred scores a rare triple metaphor on Ellsbury with 'candy', 'tin' and 'paper mache'.
  15. Jeremy Kapstein. He's a member of the Sox front office.
  16. Since Iglesias returned from the minors to replace Middlebrooks, the Sox are 8-3 with 75 runs scored and 32 runs allowed.
  17. It really wasn't that bad of a pitch. I've seen much worse.
  18. Nava boosts his OPS against lefties.
  19. That's why I enjoyed it so much when Carp hit the double off the chalk in the second game of the Yankee series. And then the next night the weather gods f***ed them over. Sweet.
  20. I can honestly say I've never heard that one before.
  21. Sox have 35 total bases in 6 innings.
  22. Drew and Iglesias are both seriously kicking ass these days. I love Middlebrooks, but I doubt we're a better team with him right now.
  23. His SLG must be way above average now. He has been hitting some shots.
