  1. Huh? BABIP is factored into WAR, seriously? Papelbon's WHIP and K/BB are also much better than Bailey's.
  2. Baseball-Ref has Papelbon at 1.0 and Bailey at 0.7, which makes more sense to me based on their numbers.
  3. Before the season I said 84 wins on paper, 90 wins if we're really fortunate, 78 wins if we're really unfortunate. Now of course I'm hoping for at least 90 wins and the division. But it's a long long season. What I'm really happy about is that this team seems to have great intangibles. It seems to be a team that shows up to play every game and bounces back from adversity.
  4. I think he's much more comfortable there now.
  5. Or maybe Ben's 'passive demeanor' is just a front, and he's an absolute ass-kicker behind the scenes. Your guess is as good as mine. All that matters is what's on the field.
  6. If you're looking for sugar coating, you're not going to get it from 700hitter.
  7. Just heard that the roster move might be Mortensen to the DL. How would that be for a perfect solution?
  8. Apparently Jose De La Torre is going to be up for tonight's game but they still have to figure out the corresponding roster move.
  9. I gotta be honest, I packed it in the bottom of the 9th with Mortensen on the mound. When I woke up this morning and checked the scores I had a bad feeling I was going to see 7-6 Rays in 9 innings. When I saw 10-8 Red Sox in 14 it was like holy f***, how did we manage that...a very ugly win, but needless to say that's 100% better than a very ugly loss.
  10. Another 10-year, quarter of a billion dollar contract for another 32-year old player. How could that be a bad idea?
  11. Yes, Pujols was an incredibly stupid contract. The Angels could see the A-Rod disaster unfolding right in front of them and they chose to copy it anyway.
  12. So Ciriaco is DFA'd, Middlebrooks is recalled and starting at 3B. Drew at SS, Iggy is backup.
  13. I know. It just gives you this s***** feeling every time we play there. Definitely the worst venue in baseball.
  14. They do get paid a lot, but some of the s*** that Red Sox managers have taken, I wouldn't wish on anybody. Don Zimmer, John McNamara, Grady Little...they all had costly f***ups, for which many Boston fans have never forgiven them. Even Francona with 2 titles has taken an inordinate amount of abuse.
  15. But good players can have huge variances in performance. Buchholz had a 4.56 ERA in 2012. He has a 1.71 ERA in 2013. Same player, hugely different results. How much can be attributed to a change in management? Nobody knows. A lot of this stuff is completely intangible.
  16. No question that good players are required. Casey Stengel had some great quotes about managing. Earl Weaver did too. Looking at it a different way, some managers can really f*** things up, whether it's Valentine with the clubhouse and the media, or Ron Washington with the in-game decisions. So maybe the test of a good manager is that they f*** things up as little as possible. Farrell seems to have minimized the f***ups so far.
  17. I agree that it's not an easy job. My own rough formula for the components of the job is something like this: 1) Managing the clubhouse and the media 50% 2) Managing the pitching staff (such as not burning out the bullpen) 30% 3) Offensive strategy and in-game decisions 20%
  18. I don't think Lee is a realistic option either. Papelbon could be available but I think it's highly unlikely the Sox would have interest. For one thing the back end of our bullpen has been pretty good. For the other Paps is just too expensive. I've been one of the Papelbon supporters. I think he'll hold up over his contract. I think the adverse opinions on Papelbon come from two things: 1) his contract; 2) his personality. I think we would be better served to look at some other starting pitchers besides Lee that might become available as salary dumps.
  19. The Yankees are harder to get rid of than cockroaches.
  20. Dempster is a maestro of mediocrity.
  21. I like Mauer a lot. But he has to be downgraded quite a bit for his mediocre power numbers. Mauer's career averages are pretty close to J. D. Drew's.
  22. Trade Iggy? That's an abhorrent thought right now.
  23. Napoli's philosophy seems to be 'Swing hard in case you hit it.' Personally I can't argue with his results so far. It was good to see him get that 'productive out' on Thursday though.
