  1. It's not foolish if he feels mentally unable to play baseball. You don't know what his mental state is, or his personal balance sheet either. And I truly believe I can change your mind on this if I re-phrase my position about 5 more times.
  2. Unless he has been very stupid with his money, he should have a personal net worth of at least 40 million. If the wife gets half that's 20 million. If you can get 2% after-tax return on 18 million of it that's 360K a year without touching the principal.
  3. Not necessarily, when it gives you six months of your life to do other things, and you don't need the money anyway. Depends on your viewpoint I guess.
  4. This is great news for the team IMO. As for Dempster, I can understand him doing it this way if he's just not up to pitching this year. It's a lot of money to toss away, but it may be the right thing for him to do personally. This way he doesn't get into any disputes with the team. And I'm pretty sure he's well set financially as it is, having made almost $90 million in his career!
  5. rjortiz is correct that if we did have Pedro, and had clinched the division, our playoff rotation would have been set up much better, because we would also have had Schilling, who came back healthy at the end of the season.
  6. If they had re-signed Pedro, it still might not have meant a World Series title in 2005. Furthermore, they might not have made the Beckett trade, so we might not have won in 2007 either. Keep in mind the Butterfly Effect - if you change one thing, many other things change too.
  7. Farrell has spoken up on the Drew situation again. He says the team still doesn't know if Drew will be back or not and it's 'almost time to move on' to be fair to the other players.
  8. Saw some nice comments from Sox players yesterday about Jeter...from Nava and Buchholz in particular. Nava said the first time Jeter talked to him, Jeter praised him for making it to the bigs...he knew all about Nava's backstory...Nava was pretty impressed by that.
  9. No, I've read plenty of Dojji's posts. Are you going to reply to every one of his posts now with your list of the 6 deadly faults? Lighten up a bit...we're all just bored and re-hashing old history here for something to do.
  10. Huh? His post was pretty straightforward.
  11. Tito made the worst mistake of his career not taking Beckett out of Game 2.
  12. Lester pitched one good game and one terrible game in the ALCS. Beckett pitched one good game and one terrible game. Dice-K pitched one good game and one terrible game. Wakefield pitched one terrible game.
  13. The injury didn't occur in the ALCS.
  14. Jeez Pal you love this stuff don't you? Beckett was 1-0 in that '08 ALCS. Lester was 0-2.
  15. The team might have done better overall, but they might also have one less championship. Also, with regard to Hanley and Sanchez, those two have had their ups and downs. And Sanchez, now that he has developed into a solid starter, is making a ton of money too. There are a lot of permutations and combinations.
  16. The Beckett trade should never be second-guessed. As you implied, it resulted in a championship. Also, there's no way of knowing what it would have taken to obtain Halladay or Felix. It's amazing the fascination we have with analyzing things that might have been or not been. A remarkably pointless exercise, if you really think about it.
  17. One little footnote on the Arroyo trade that I'm sure I've mentioned before...Epstein did manage to convert Pena into 2 draft picks (traded Pena for C. Carter, traded Carter for Billy Wagner, got the picks when Wagner went elsewhere). One of the picks was used to take Ranaudo.
  18. Here is the complete list of pitchers on the Yankees' current 40-man roster that pitched more than 5 innings of relief in the majors last year: DRob 66.1 IP / 2.04 ERA / 2.4 WAR Warren 77.0 / 3.39 / 1.2 Nuno 20.0 / 2.25 / 0.7 Thornton 43.1 / 3.74 / 0.5 Claiborne 50.1 / 4.11 / 0.3 Kelley 53.1 / 4.39 / 0.0 Phelps 86.2 / 4.98 / -0.1 Phelps's numbers are total including starting appearances. As it stands this is one incredibly thin-looking pen. I know they have a bunch of young guys who'll be auditioning. It's very surprising, though, that they didn't pick up a guy like Balfour, who seemed like a great fit at a reasonable cost. Have to think there are more moves coming...but it's still a little puzzling.
  19. Madson got $6 million in 2012 from the Reds without throwing a pitch for them. He got $3.25 million in 2013 from the Angels without throwing a pitch for them. I don't have a good punch line for this joke but I know there must be one.
  20. You don't get enough credit for your sense of humor, Fred.
  21. Not buying it, SoxSport. When the games start people have a habit of wanting to win 'em. Lots of people already talking about the Sox repeating.
  22. Ha...if only it worked that way for everybody. I remember in the 2005 season people ragging on Francona for sticking with Millar, ragging on Epstein for Clement and Wells and 'Rent-a-Wreck', ragging on Foulke for sucking, ragging on Manny for being a malcontent etc. I remember 2008 for people ragging on Francona for getting outmanaged by Madden etc.
  23. We'll see how mild you stay when the real games start up again, Fred.
