    The Sox could not have botched the Betts trade much worse if they tried. They traded him to the team that was probably in the absolute best position to sign him to an extension, and they got a crappy return to boot (as shown by the Padres' return for Soto). Just an unbelievably bad job. Epic ineptitude. New York Jets level.

    Who knows what impacted his decision the most? Can't overlook that the Dodgers had a lot to offer-a team with a ton of resources, committed to winning, great weather, the whole package, really.

    Mike Trout is out there as another example that even the best of the best can have their careers derailed any time. And Trout was a better player than Soto is. And Soto will be getting about 50% more money than Trout's extension was.

    That's probably because "afford" isn't the right word. The question is whether $650-700 million for any player is a rational expenditure. I think John Henry's opinion is that it is not. He already demonstrated this at a much smaller number with Betts.

    I'm honestly surprised how many folks are entertaining this as a real world possibility. For John Henry to out-crazy Steve Cohen would be the most shocking and hilarious 180% turn by a sports owner in history. One big real world problem is that Henry has other owners to answer to, whereas Cohen does not.

    Yeah, I took a quick look into it and there doesn't seem to be any evidence other than he was exceptionally big and strong for his age.

    Hey, I'd love to have him too. But bidding against the Yankees, Mets and Dodgers is not really a formula for getting a fair deal. This is so reminiscent of the Yamamoto talk last year. Maybe Anthony will be a superstar and they'll lock him up early.

    Fried and Burnes might get $150-200 million. Soto might get $650-700 million. Whichever way you go, there's going to be a pile of risk baked into the price. Anyone can get injured any time. There's really no sound principles on which to compare the options. We're in the world of the irrational here, where fragile athletes get decade-plus guaranteed mega-contracts. I just think that $650-700 million number is way, way too high for John Henry to even consider. After all, $350 million for Betts was obviously enough to make him very uneasy, and that wasn't forever ago. And Betts was arguably at least as good a bet as Soto, even given their official* age difference. * Someone else opened up the age rabbit hole, I'm just acknowledging its existence.

    That's all pure speculation. Nothing wrong with speculation, we all do it. But the numbers are what they are. A career ERA+ of 98 at this point is just not impressive, regardless of the underlying factors.

    I think it'll come down to the Mets and the Dodgers for Soto. The Dodgers are obviously every player's dream destination right now. And the deal they made with Ohtani is thought to give them the cash flow relief they will need to pay Soto. Steve Cohen is the one owner in baseball who will actually reach into his own pocket to pay the talent. And he has an estimated net worth of 21 billion. As for the Yanks, Soto says it was a great experience, but I suspect he might have been turned off a bit by the sourness and finger-pointing that came out of their World Series flop.

    If you believe Anthony and Campbell are going to be elite MLB hitters, these are the guys you should be dreaming on IMHO. I'm not trying to downplay Soto's talent. He could be an all time elite hitter. But the price tag will be beyond ridiculous.

    Alonso is a 1B and a DH in the making. We already have Casas and Devers in that profile, without even bringing Yoshida into it.

    And what are we hearing about a trade for Crochet? We're hearing you'd want to sign him to an extension ASAP. The cheap part goes out the window pretty quick.

    Let me rephrase: the timing to trade Yoshida could not be worse. Therefore I don't think it's something that will be explored this offseason.

    I'll take it a step further and say I think chasing Soto would be a very bad idea. We have 4 terrific prospects and they're all position players. What we need is pitching and better defense. Soto is nether. Soto is looking for an AAV of about $50 million. That would create havoc with the budget. Soto and Devers would be taking up $80 million of it for a long time. How are you going to do that, pay the pitchers and sign Anthony to an extension etc.? Do you think Henry is going to morph into Cohen all of a sudden? Gotta be realistic here.

    Price was not at all a surprising signing IMHO.

    Nope, perfectly legal. Heck, someone might even offer to pay $2 million a year of his salary.

    My call is this: 1) Yes, we will acquire a TOTR pitcher. 2) No, there will be no offer by the Red Sox to Juan Soto. But they will probably get it out there that they're "engaged" or "checking in" on him, as they did with Yamamoto.

    Personally I think one of Henry's guiding principles in his ownership of the Red Sox is not to get into the kind of bidding war we're going to see here. This should be a spectacle the likes of which we haven't seen before. I thought we were going to see one or two of these last year with Ohtani and Moto, but the fun was short-circuited by their desires to play for the Dodgers. I think Soto would much prefer to sit back, smile and watch the fireworks.
